0 gspman
A good flasher is indispensable. You can tell if there are fish down there and how far off the bottom they are, what the bottom type is, how aggressive the fish are, where your jig is in relation to the fish, and if your jigging technique and what you are using is attracting them or spooking them. I could go on and on. It's to the point with me where I don't want to fish unless I have one with. I use a Marcum LX-3.
0 Tripleplay
Just this year I really focused on ice fishing and I can tell you that other than the auger to get through the ice, I'm not sure I could fish without a flasher. Every now and then my 12 year old son "borrows" mine to one of his holes and I'm darn near lost! I definitely have come to rely on it. Now I just need to find a cheap one for my son so I can keep mine where it does me the most good--in my hole! We do try to "share" it when in the house but not able to do that when I'm actively hole-hopping.
0 outdoor ran
I taught my 5 year old how to use the vex while fishing for panfish last weekend. Scary how quickly kids catch on to using stuff like that. I had a blast watching him use that thing. First thing he tells his mom when I get him home is that he wants a vex for xmas next year and his own shack.
0 WalleyeStriker
I just purchased the FL-8SE this year. Me and my buddy were fishing for about an hour before we had to go to work. I had my Vex and he forgot his at home.... (not to smart) I caught 7 out of the 10 fish and the other 3 were when he used my Vex. What a difference. I wont leave it in a heart beat, its next to my Bible!!
0 Blackduck
This is my first year with a Vex. (fl-18) I have been out fished every time out by someone with just a hole and a pole. Okay, but I do have an explination. My dad is about the best panfisher I have ever laid eyes on, and he kicks my butt no matter what. Although, he will be getting a Vex. for next year, he loves it. 2 trips up to Winnie and my brother out fished me with nothing. Although it was -40 in the mornings, and only got up to -17 for the weekend, and 4 guys came home with 12 perch. The other trip to Winnie all 3 of use got outfished by a tip up with a plain hook and a fathead. 62 keepers, and 17 came on the tip up. I did catch some northerns that I would have never known were there, they chased a jiggin rap on the drop, and I stopped the rap about 20 feet down in 32 feet of water and caught em. On Winnie I caught a ton of Tulibee with my Vex. they were about 5-8 feet off the bottom, and I would have never known they were there without it. But to agree with you, I would say it helps a ton. My dad will always out fish me because he just has that "spring bobber touch", and all the old timers seem to know how to put those panfish in a trance with thier tiny jigging cadance. I do catch my dad looking over my shoulder a lot trying to see if there are any fish in the area.
0 Northlander
Ya Outdoorran you are a great teacher cuzz that little 5 yr. old of yours schooled me! I had to leave early before I lost every ounce of pride I had left. How he caught so many fish and still found time for a ride on the horse and a snowball fight is beyond me. 0 jcbh
IMO, the fl-8 was the best invention for ice fishing since the power auger. The fl-18 has even improved it, would not fish without it.
0 Bobberboy
Fishing without a flasher is like fishing in the dark without a light"Your bobbers down!"
0 deathtwitcher
Now what we need is for someone to invent a way to keep fish from tangling in the transducer cord! Why is it that the biggest fish always seem to do that? If I hook into a hog, I always pull the T-ducer out of the hole to keep from tangling up. Especially with this thick ice you have to have the T-ducer a ways down the hole to get a good reading.
0 ozzy
It makes it more fun when they tangle around the trasnducer. Kind of like a long distance release
