I use the black vinyl coated tip up line with a flourocarbon leader of 6 feet or less, depending on clarity of water.

I've tried dacron, mono, and the vinyl coated line. In my opinion, the vinyl coated line is the most tangle free. Large diameter dacron is just about equall to the vinyl line though. I will never ever put just straight mono on again.

I've used rattle reels for many years, and I found that old fly line works great. Easy to old onto and never get tangled on the fish house floor. I also add a couple of feet 8lb mono for a leader. After cahnging hooks a couple of times I just replace it.

I use some tip-up line. I like the non-coated stuff b/c it doesnt have any memory to it. I normally always use a leader on it. I like fireline or powerpro on some of them is there is gators in the area, otherwise I use about 6lb or 8lb mono.

I even use some fly line for ice fishing. The reason I like that is if the fish decides to run on you you wont burn a big hole into your hand.

Dog, as stated before, use a line that is quite large so that it wil not tangle and will give you something to hold on to. Braided dacron(NOT THE SUPER BRAID LIKE SPIDERWIRE) seems to work well fly line is also a good one... remember you can always put about a 5-10 foot leader on if you are worried about the fish being able to see it.
