Extra Pole Stamp

Just wondering if the Minnesota DNR has ever considered selling an Extra Pole Stamp? In Arizona you can purchase a Extra Pole stamp for $5.00. The stamp is attatched to your licence. It enables the stamp holder to fish with another pole. This generated a surplus in the Az Game and Fish dept. which was the only state sponsered dept that was in the black. What do you think?

Funny, I was just talking about this 20 mins ago at the bar. I was in New Mexico just before Mem. day and bought a license at Wal-mart in Santa Fe. They asked everyone if they wanted an extra pole, I think it was about 10 bucks. It was a long line and every single person asked the same question--"How do you fish with 2 poles?" There wasn't a lake within 70 miles, no trolling, no tip ups! I fish alot in Wisconsin (2 lines, 3 on ice)--It would be great to have the option of using another pole in MN.

I would be all over it if the DNR offered that. Sounds like a good idea. What a great way to create additional revenue as well. I can only imagine the bureaucratic talk that currently exists in our legislature would never let it happen (unless of course they could get their geedy hands on some of the $).

I like the thought though...

What a great idea! After fishing border waters where two lines are allowed during open water it finda sucks to come back to MN fishing with one line. Even if you don't prefer using two lines at least you have the opportunity to fish with another line if so desired. What's the difference if you use one line or two lines, the limits are in place to protect from over fishing. I think that I would vote for up to four lines during the winter. Heck when things are slow what's the differance? A five or a ten dollar stamp would be perfect.

I dont think its a good idea, just because if there not biting on two lines, why would they bite on a third line. And if your just pounding the sunnys or perch or something you probably wouldnt have time to mess with a third line.

I think its a good idea for the state to make some money. If you are fishing and dont need 3 lines dont use them, but heck I'm sure quite a few people would buy the stamp. It wouldn't change the number of fish a guy takes home if he only keeps what he will eat anyway.

Dan L you hit it right on the head. I dont know how many times I have been on a sharp drop off and wished I could set up two tip ups in the shallows and fish for slabs in the deeper part. Or even 1 tip up and two lines in the house. This is all very wishfull thinking though.

Border waters already allow it, so if MN had a stamp so some could legally fish an extra line, and with the lack of funding for CO's in the field, I think the majority would be fishing 2 regardless if they purchased a stamp or not.

Just raise the license $3 and allow 2 open and 3 hardwater and be done with it.

There are times when running extral lines are very beneficial, While trolling on Lake Superior for example, with hundreds of bait patterns out there not to mention Dipseys, Downriggers, Wire Line, Leadcore and so on. It is key to have a variety of options out there. When we are on the MN side we can only run two lines apeice, but if we cross a imaginary line in the middle of the lake we can run 3 cause we are in WI. I don't know how many of you have tried Lake Superior Fishing but if you get two lake trout with Just 4 lines in the water then you are doing really, really, well.

Cheffrey,

I know exactly what you mean. I love running planer boards. I fish mostly inland lakes (although I love Superior). There is this big empty feeling when you and a buddy have two planer boards out and there are no lines going straight out the back. It just ain't right. If you can master fishing in-line board fishing at night, you ought to be allowed to fish another bonus line !! grin.gif

I would be all for this one! I really like the stamp idea too. If the cost would be $20 for a extra rod and reel im sure a lot of people would still do it. I think its just another one of those great ways to get money into the outdoors.

I disagree with the idea of PAYING for the right to use second pole. NO WAY !

I agree we should be able to fish two poles.

We pay enough in fees and taxes in my opinion.

You want to pay more to set a extra tip-up ?

What next MN 3583 2673 on both sides of your truck so you can drive it on the lake ?

How about a toll booth at every public access !!!

Five dollars for a yearly sticker on your Vexilar or camera.

50 percent sales tax on super lines.

NO NO NO and NO

We have a great resourse in both fishing and hunting, but that comes with a price tag that we have to pay.

Never before have our Deer hunting numbers been so good.

Our fishing is getting better every year. Just look at how they have turned Red lake around !!!!

All with the cut backs that the DNR are getting hit with, and it has no sign of turning around.

So if they ask me to pay more, I would do it in a heartbeat, just as long as the money goes back into what I love !!!!!

I have to agree with the above post....no fee for an extra line. Other states have more lines for the price of the fishing license. Being originally from ND (2 lines summer/4 winter) it's hard for me to agree with the reg's here in MN. It would be really nice to have some tip-ups out while jigging in the house and it makes it a lot more fun at times. I hardly utilize tip-ups here anymore as I'd rather jig when limited to only two lines.

Also gone along the wayside are ice house licenses in other states. I agree that they create a lot of revenue, but the part I don't agree with is licensing a portable or any house that is not left unoccupied.

Just my feelings. grin.gif

I agree with you Vikings fan, 100 percent but I do not think additional fees and taxes will be spent where you or I want them spent.

Here is an idea I think we both could support.

When a fishing or hunting license is sold the buyer is asked if they wish to contribute five , ten or twenty dollars to a fund that is earmarked for habitat or stocking programs.

Those who could afford to would probably be more than happy to donate, if it were a well managed program with accounting in place to show where the money is spent.
