ChuckN
I hit the ice for some early action with fellow FM'er, Gissert. We spent Saturday on an Otter Tail County lake going for gills, crappies and walleyes (or whatever would bite). I recently received some new products from FishingMN.com sponsors to field test, and overall I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of these items. I thought I'd share some results from this weekend since I don't want to leave you all in the cold. I tried out a Fish Brother's Tip-up with a jig and minnow combo and caught some fish on this set-up. A nice bass and a bluegill fell victim to this set-up. I strung up some 30lb test mono with an 8lb leader. I was surprised to find my hole completely ice free the entire time I used this tip up since I was constantly breaking an ice skim on my other holes while jigging nearby. No ice formed on the reel itself. When I iced this gill we thought for sure it was a walleye on the other end, and we just had to get a good laugh at what we found. I was impressed a bluegill pulled line like it did. The wind was blowing a bit and I never had one false alarm flag on this set-up, and it is really sensitive. I also tried out another sponsor product, the Fish'N-Chum rod holder. I have to be honest, I was skeptical of this at first but I had to give it a shot first. I used it quite a bit while unhooking fish, and found how easy it was jig my rod. It was not cumbersome to have this strapped to my leg and often times I didn't realize it was there. I actually caught this walleye while my rod was in the Fish'N Chum while chatting with Gissert. I was not paying much attention to my surroundings, but it's better than losing the rod. And I have always been a fan of Scenic Tackle's Go Devils. That walleye above was caught on a chartruese 1/16 oz Go Devil. And, crappies absolutely love 'em too. Click here on http://www.tacklecity.com/ to find all of these items and, please support our sponsors that allows this great HSOforum free for all of us to use. Good fishing!! Matt Johnson
Good report Chuck! Rick and I made it out on Lake of the Woods this weekend in search of walleyes and saugers. We went out of Zipple Bay and we joined Brian from Lucky Bait and Kerry, Troy and Jimmy from Hillbilly to the Bone Guide Service. Kerry helped put us on some fish and we had some pretty consistant action all day. I also got to use quite a few of the sponsor products as well. Some very nice gear! The Fish'n Chum was very nice and I plan on using them more in the future. The Lazy Jigger and Rod Strap from Todays Tackle were productive as well. The Ice Buster Bobber took a number of fish including the biggest walleye of the day that was around 24-25 inches. Custom Jigs and Spins came up big this weekend for us. I had pretty good success with the Slender Spoon in the gold color tipped with a minnow head. The Red Glow Demons were also catching a lot of fish. We tipped them with both whole minnows or pieces of a minnow. I've mostly used Custom Jigs and Spins only for panfish in the past but I was very impressed on how productive they are on walleyes and saugers too. Glow Red Demon Slender Spoon Bad Dog Lures also produced for us this weekend. The hot items from Bad Dog were the Pin Minnows and Twin Minnows. Again, gold was the hot color and we tipped them with a minnow head or the tail section of a minnow. Pin Minnow Twin Minnow Other lures that caught fish included the JR's Tackle Jigging Spoons and the Scenic Tackle Go Devils. I know that Rick caught about 6 fish in about 20 minutes on a 1/4oz red glow Go Devil. Overall it was a pretty successful trip. About 5-6 inches of ice up there where we were fishing and we targeted depths around 13-15 feet. Good Fishin, Matt Johnson

korn_fish
Matt - I didn't realize Bad Dog Lures was a sponser of this site until I seen your post. For bobber fishing or tip ups, I LOVE their water bug with the white eye. Their HSOforum listed these as new products, but I thought they have made them for years. I first used these back 7 years ago or so and anytime I seen them in a tackle store I loaded up. Anywhoo - didn't see them as an option on the FM site, just their other jig kits. I already stocked up for the winter since I had to replace what got bitten off this fall by the pesky northerns and a lucky internet search lead me to the bad dog lures web site. But these have outfished any plain hook/minnow or other jig/minnow deadstick/tip-up set that I use for crappies/eyes/perch.
Matt Johnson
korn_fish,Thanks for the info. I agree, Bad Dog makes a nice product and their off-the-wall colors really seem to trigger fish into biting from time to time. I'm going to have to try the Water Bug, thanks for the tip!Good Fishin,Matt Johnson

Gissert
I really liked those tip ups. It was amazing to see a bluegill trip one, yet not have any wind trips.

Northlander
Did a bit of testing myself in the last week. I had to try the fish n chum out just to see if it was as useful as I thought. It wound up being the center of attention for a bit and even drew some laughs but I tell ya what it served its purpose very well. I could have 2 hands free to tie knots etc. and didnt have to worry about my rod getting wet or trying to balance it on my lap. Best thing was I can jig and eat a sandwich at the same time. Yes it looks like a novilty but It was very useful. Only problem I had was my leg would sweet with it over my Carharts. I just took it off every once in a while when I was out of the house stretching my long legs. I cant wait to try it in the front of the boat slip drifting the river.I also got my JR's Tackle reels out and the new 8 ball bearing reels are real smooth. I even prefer it over the 11 ball bearing for size on smaller ice rods. The Flasher spoons are quickly catching on with those I let use them and I caught a lot of walleyes on them this week. The Fishing Brothers tip ups did a lot of "Talking" as well. They took a lot of light biters. The ease of release on them is nice and they packed up easily. My new Midwest rods are my favorite Custom Rods now. Great workmanship and lightweight! I usually am a cork handle type guy but after using the new wood handles Im very surprised how light and sensitive the rods are with them. Now I need to get my Otter, Nilsmaster auger and Marcum 560 out on the water. Cant wait! Good fishin!
iffwalleyes
Northland, What did you get for a rod from Midwest. What kind of action, length, etc? Also If you don't mind what kind of price do these go for?
Northlander
IFFwalleyes I got a 32" Med with a faster action and a cork handle as well as a 32" med/light with a faster action and the new wood handle. As far as price it depends on what you order. I got my name on mine and some other goodies so mine was a bit more expensive. Call Bill or Al and they can give ya a exact price. www.midwestrodandreel.com I think almost all rods are less than $50. Believe me they are worth every cent! Bill and Al also stand behind their work 100%. Call Bill he loves to talk fishin and rods and tell him I sent ya.
iffwalleyes
Ok sounds like they are nice. I am kind of partial to Thornes' Bros myself but I am always willing to try different things.
Northlander
iffwalleyes they both make real good rods but you will save some $ going with midwest. The customer service I have gotten from Bill is in the best Ive ever had. The turnaround time is great. Call Bill and talk to him and decide for yourself. After all its what your comfortable with that counts.
