Kylersk
I've got an otter lodge. My father-in-law said their lake has 6.5" of ice. He wont fish till there's about 8" though. I'm debating if I should bring up my portable, or fish without it.
EBass
Bring it! That's thick enough. I'd think 3-4" would be enough. It's just a portable. Weighs about 100 I assume. But then you have to lug it around. Hopefully there's some deep water with safe ice close to shore.
Kylersk
Yeah.. I forgot they dont weight that much. My father-in-laws comments made me a bit cautious.

Lost
Well, the DNR says it's safe for snowmobiles at 6 inches so you should be fine.
psegriz
If you can walk on it you can sit in your portable. Sitting in your portable your weight is distributed further out that way.
Sportland_Bait
When I'm on foot with a portable in tow I've felt comfortable on 4-5 inches. Just check ahead.Jason Erlandson
IcEaHoLiC
I have the Genz fish trap guide, even though it weighs 40 pounds less than the otter, i was out fishing on ice that was 2-3".....didnt realize it was that thin getting out here until the auger took less than half a sec to get through....knees got a little weak at that time....but i fished for the next few hours and felt a little better until it was time to walk the 400 yards back to shore So four inches would be plenty I think....I know I would go out with 4"
