Guest
Hey I am heading up this year over the 4th of July and will be staying at Fishermans Cove resort. I was just wondering how many of you guys use worms on harnesses up there? We seemed to have the best luck with spinners and minnows. However this will be my first trip in July. I can't wait to leave! Thanks all.
WB make the CUT
Crawlers are great, most of the time you can get by with 2 hook rig, even a one hook rig.We always catch or largest eyes on Lac Suel with crawlers
STILLNOFISH
I personally do not use crawlers on Lac Seul. Our group will switch between jig/minnow and jig/leach. The leach seems to catch the bigger fish the past few years. Drift with this rig until you locate some fish. Good Luck to ya. We will be on lac seul next thursday. jeffyo45
StillnofishWhere are you staying? I am heading up Tuesday and staying at Ojibway outfitters. Maybe we will run into each other.
PRO-V
We have used crawlers almost exclusively the last 9 years. 1/3 of a crawler on a jig is hot. Has been better than minnows or leeches.
STILLNOFISH
Jeffyo45,We will be staying with Lac Seul Outposts from the 18th -23rd. It appears there are several people that like the crawler up there. I may just have to give it a try, but as most people know that fish this lake, you could probably throw corn down there and catch some walleyes. Last year we were getting tired of always having to put on minnows so we decided to use some twister tails. We were able to catch a few by using this rig as well. Good luck to you all and lets pray that there will not be another forest fire this year.
whitefish
STILLNOFISH,We are going to be at Lac Seul Outposts from the 19th to the 26th. I'm in agreement with you on the no fire prayers. But with the weather they have had so far this year I don't think that's an issue. We have had years where using PowerBait was just as good and sometimes better than minnows. I've heard stories of guys running out of leaches and using black electrical tape and still catching tons of fish.whitefish
snagger
During mid-summer, I've found that a 1/3 of a crawler on a spinner rig with a bottom bouncer is a good way to fish. If you find the fish really schooled up, switch to a jig and crawler or leech. I have about the same luck with leeches or crawlers. I'm sure minnows work as well. I have not had as much success with plastics. I tried them this year on the opener. I was out-fished badly by my partners using minnows. Good luck! Hugo
I've been to L.S. 2x and didn't use live either time. Jigs and plastic, Bottom bouncers and power crawlers and trolled crankbaits. Caught lots of fish.
Guest
Any recent reports from up there. Just wondering if it is worth it to haul up some worms or not? We seem to pound them on minnows just looking to try something a little different.
Goldy
What is the law for bringing leeches and crawlers across the border. We used minnows last year and had a great bite but you guys have me thinking of other baits. I have to wait until the week of Labor day and you guys are killing me.Goldy
Guest
No leeches across the border. You can buy them up there but they seem small. Worms can be brought across just not in dirt, they must be in worm bedding.
Pike111
Our group has used either leaches or worms over the past five years. Minnows can be a pain. We always take one flat of crawlers per boat for the week and at least 1 Lb of leaches per guy. Have a cooler with ice in your boats to keep the bait and your fish fresh. Last week fishing was slow and the best bet for us was a single bare hook. Very few takers with anything flashy. Leaches did well for the first two days and by midweek, the crawlers kicked in and did the best. Surprisingly we were catching multiple fish on a single crawler. Multiple hook worm harnesses in my mind are not necessary and can result in deeply hooked fish or fishermen ( if you hand land) or a mess in the net. A crawler on a jig head in shallow water can be deadly. Our group of 5 caught 700 fish last week as compared to 1,700 a year ago. Good luck. Oh buy the way, if you get caught with even a small amount of dirt in your worm bedding, you will be dumping them at the border. We have actually washed our crawlers and packed in clean bedding for the last three years.
WB make the CUT
Big EyesJust got back from the Hudson/Deception area, water is a little cooler than normal for this time of year I saw between 55-57 on the surface, we caught more fish on minnows than on crawlers. The leeches we found in Canada were small, hope for a warm up and some stable weather to kick start the summer feeding frenzy!!!Good luck let us know how you did.
