I don't know about anyone else but I'm getting **** fed up with this nice weather and am ready for some cold temps to start making ice. Chompin at the bit to get out with my new Clam Nanook shelter got it last year just before I had a new knee installed so didn't get any ice fishing in.

This is MN. right ? I mean I don't remember moving down south to warmer climates

I'm pretty new to ice fishing. I have lived my whole life in MN but never really paid attention to the ice until now. When temperatures start to consistently stay under freezing, how long does it generally take to have walkable ice? ( 3" to 6" )

Lets say we're hypothesizing about a round body of water, 500 acres. I would guess it takes a week to put even a full, thin cover of ice.

there are multiple factors that can effect how fast ice forms. wind, temp, depth of the lake are just some.

here is a chart you might be interested in. it show how much ice will form in a 24 hour period at given temps. read the disclaimer at the bottom of this chart

2 out of 4 lakes I check today still had about 70% open water and the other 2 are iced over completely but the one has distinct lines over the deeper water which tells me that the ice is thinner there. at shore on this lake there is 1.5" broke through with 2 hits of the chisel while standing on dry land. the last lake I checked had a consistant look to the ice but was only 1.5 " at the shore line also. I give it a week or two of colder weather and I may be walking out by then even if it is not to the exact area I want to get to.

Yes, I have been out the last two weekends up here in North Central ND. 6 inches last weekend and close to 8 inches this weekend. Not quite confident enough to really get serious and move around a bunch, but have been catching some nice Walleyes in the areas I fished. It feels good to be walking on water again!!
