Valentine's Day

Recommended Posts

Sunday is Valentine's Day.  I don't have a mom any longer so my work will be focused on a 15 yr old daughter and a 50 yr old wife (I'm younger, she's a cradle robber).  Meal will have to focus on more tasty veggies and a good salad with some clod of meat that women find tasty.  Tenderloin or something.

It's always nice to receive a heavy gift so I'm eyeing up an 8 inch cast iron pan for the elder of the two.  Maybe two Bernie bumper stickers for the daughter, one for each of us.  May have to search around for the journal I made years ago for the wife.  I stole all the love notes I had written over the years she "hid" in her unmentionable drawer and put them together in a book.  I left space in the last half or so of the journal for adding future stuff.  I write them less and she keeps the ones I do write infrequently I'd wager.  I can figure something out.

Get to work boys!

At least those Bernie bumper stickers are free! (for a nominal donation I suspect ;)) Ah LL, we have yet more in common, grasshopper. It was about 3 years ago we were started down the road to my Mom's decline. Lost her in late June that year. Life has not been the same. And like Mrs. LL, Mrs. Cheviot is also a cradle robber. Took one look at me and decided, I gots to get me some of that. And the rest as they say is history. Well, my version anyway. :)

I got a head start on Valentine's Day this past Saturday. Found a Canadian distillate that comes with a pouch on sale so stocked up. While I was at it I treated myself to a bottle of juniper berry extract with a picture of a British guy on it. I panicked given the variety of partial bottles in the cabinet that we'd suddenly run short. I hate to give the frequent uninvited guests the "good stuff" anyway.

Then I went to Hallmark and scored a couple cards (Peanuts especially Snoopy cards are her favorite). They also have a series of Peanuts figurines that I started getting there a few years ago. Toss in a heart-shaped box of chocolates and I was suddenly suffering from shopping overload. Needed to pace myself. Reinhard keeps talking about T-bones and whatnot so think a trip to Fareway late week to score some steaks for a romantic supper cooked on the grill may be in order. Complete with a Marquette or her favorite is the LaCrescent from Four Daughters. Already got that for her at Christmas. Maybe a flask... ;)

Still trying to figure out how much of whoever it is Reb is trying to depict is still stuck in the snow. Maybe I'm just not looking at it from the wrong angle...

Boy I don't know LL,  you best approach this the right way. Let me put it this way, if that meal isn't spot on you just might get that cast iron skillet up side the mellon, and those bumper stickers might be used to take off some back hair.            We wish you luck.

Wait a second...Deb is fond of Snoopy cards too, she even had a dog named Snoopy when she was a kid.  Also, "feeling down have a Crown" was a favorite line we used for years.  There's also a story of buying the purple "velvet" bagged liquid wholesale  I could tell, but won't.  I will say $35 a bottle is less than $52 a bottle but the quantity layed in doesn't impress the wife a whole lot.  It didn't impress my buddy's wives to much either so we got to be in trouble together, which is nice.

Also, good tip on the beverages for V day, I forgot that one.  After 20 plus years together I can't seem to get the recipe just right for her though.  My goal is to get her just lit enough for me to be even better looking but not too much or she get's sleepy.  I think we all know this old trick.

Dotch, thanks for taking me under your wing.  You're wisdom is very helpful.

I was thinking the same thing.  The 12 inch skillet is way too heavy for her to swing fast.  She's pretty weak frankly, she was a cheerleader and not an athlete.  That 8 inch skillet could be used as a weapon, even by her.  Both if she cooked with it or used it to try to hit me (obviously she doesn't read this stuff).

She is a right wing loony bird too.  The other night we were dozing off and I put on old Hillary and Bernie debating and she freaked out, "I can't listen to this, turn it off!!!!"  Bernie makes me laugh.

I think we've graduated past V day gifts ourselves.  Last three years for our anniversary I think we went to a kids hockey game, maybe dinner before.  She's huge on birthdays though so can't do nothing for that.  Fathers Day is usually going to the presentation for Father of the Year which I have won 17 years in a row now.  I'm running out of speech material but somehow come up with something for it every year and the crowd always likes it.

Our anniversary is Pearl Harbor Day and her birthday is Sept 11th so I'm pretty sure even when I'm put in the nursing home or St Peter home I will always remember.  I tried the Snoopy trick last night Reb, didn't work.

Ya we don't give gifts anymore neither.  Sometimes I feel like we should do more but like my buddy Jeff Boar said and I won't write it verbatim.   It is completely a made up spending situation so we love each other and try not to get to wacko over it.  I do love my wife, she is my best friend and I want her to know that and I tell her I love her every day.  We always say I love you when we leave for work for the day.  You never know what could happen during that day and it may be the last time you get to say it.  We never say that but it is what I think.   I just told her your idea Smurfy about going out to eat on a different day.  We are going to do that.  We are going out to eat either Fri or Sat night.  We only have 2 cocktails since we have to drive and then we get home early.

with a little more thought I would add

Coming up on being married thirty-nine years, we gave up trying to buy each other gifts years ago. I will give her a dollar box of chocolates just to let her know I didn’t forget and she will let me eat them. Years ago I went to a florist and ordered a big fancy bouquet of flowers and paid extra to have them delivered to the house when I knew she would be there. Well the flowers came and she was not home and I paid to have them delivered to myself. Told her that was the end of flower giving except I do give her a pack of seeds in the spring.. Being old and married we don’t need things to remind us, We got kids and grand kids running around for that..

since I brought this topic up I can derail it although only a bit.

When I met my lovely wife I also had recently met another young lady.  This was a long long time ago.  I will leave out some details but let me just say that from around mid December on I was pretty busy juggling things.  One worked in the same building I did and one lived in the same apartment building I did.  I was managing things just fine and thought I had the whole world figured out.  I'd bet it was around Feb 11 or so and I got a phone call from one of them asking what we were going to do for V day.  While I was on the phone the receptionist buzzed in on this intercom on my phone saying the other one was on hold, I think the receptionist knew what was going on and thought it was pretty funny.

The jig was up and I had to make a choice.  I hate to fess up but I broke up with the one I married.  It may have been only a week or two and I came to my senses but I picked the blonde.  Oh well...I'm a has been now.

Wisdom? Helpful? Two words foreign to my vocabulary. These are just things I'm doing. The last thing I'd suggest anyone should do for their spouse is what I do. I still remember giving Mrs. Cheviot a gift certificate for a massage once. One of my employees was doing the same thing for his wife. She was NOT impressed. I've had other "bombs" over the years too. What does seem to impress her is originality. I make mental notes when she says stuff over the course of a year and save it in my vault for future reference.

A lot of the gift things I mentioned too are for both of us to share. We are about to embark on a busy stretch at home and at work so being able to get a brief "timeout" prior to all that will be nice. She's worked at Hallmark and in the floral business for years so the last thing she wants is flowers and I've been told that. A unique plant? Perhaps. Hallmark cards and such? The card is a gimme; one from me and one from the dogs. I try to maintain the element of surprise yet some semblance of continuity. It's a tough balancing act for me sometimes but it's like buying a classic car, hunting, fishing, the right ingredients/beverage for a meal, etc.:The thrill is in the chase and knowing when the time is right. :)

Here I thought I'd read this and find out all of you guys had ordered one of those big "Hunks of Love" Teddy Bears.:D

I get by easy. my B day is the 16th, Granddaughters the 18th, so we just head out to Aberdeen-spend the night in a motel, celebrate 2 birthdays, and take everyone out for supper. Now her B day is a different story, missed it once when I was in Canada fishing and have been paying for it ever since.(1986):(

Ooooo! Got my Valentines stuff before Mrs. Cheviot bolted to work. Good thing too as I was weakening after escaping all her lusty advances. :D  A box of chocolates, a bottle of tincture (I was starting to run low) and a 6 pack of Dos Equis Amber. Looks like I may survive through this lambing season yet!
