Places to shoot a new rifle - from the metro

My 10 year old saved up and bought his .243 today. He is a very happy young man. 

BUT with the local ranges now closed to the public I am thinking I might have to drive out to state forest land and find a logging clearing somewhere to shoot it. Does anyone know of another option? I live in the metro area and I am just hoping for some place within an hour.

Try 27th and Lyndale N. There's always some shooting going on down there anyway!

Really you may have to head up north a bit unless you want to just pop off some rounds in a short range like Bill's gun shop.

Also, you may want to post in the gun area instead of the Open Water thread for more feedback.

The Pine Island White Pines Sportsmans Club is about an hour south, and they have a range that goes to 200 yards.   Might have to join  to shoot. Right near highway 52 in Pine Island.

Yes there's shooting going on over north but it's tradgedy.

They have a web page, but it isn't the best one I've ever seen.  Phone call might be the ticket.

Bills gun shop Robbinsdale.  Have an indoor range your can shoot a 243 at and a computer simulator that helps sight in at 100 or 200 based on the short range.

You must be a member and trained to shoot at White Pines. Same at the Byron club, and the Southern Minnesota Sportsman's club, been a member at all three. (Current at SMSC)  However, you can go as a guest to the SMSC with a member and shoot; but it still costs you $20.

I did see that list and most seem to be members only now. I posted in the hopes that someone could save me a substantial amount of searching.

Thanks 38bill! I had just stumbled upon Del-tone and I have an email in to them but I think I have to ring them. We'll see if a 10 year old can shoot there.
