Popular Post pikestabber
My nephew and I smacked a few grouse on Sunday, and I have been getting him into mushroom hunting the past few summers, so we got to merge some summer findings with the fall bird harvest and had a dual dinner of ruffed grouse and chicken of the woods mushrooms, or "Dual Chickens" as we called it. Was fantastic! JP Z, eyeguy 54, Stick in Mud and 5 others

leechlake
I need to learn/teach myself this mushroom game. I've been out hunting and seeing all this fungus and I couldn't tell you the best one from the one that would mess a guy up. I'd guess it's just another outdoor learning game like all the other things.

bobberineyes
My in laws found out the hard way last year, make a long story short the Dr at the ER told them they would've been fine if they ate something else with the chicken, or had more of a base in there system when consuming. ...lots of stops in the ditch on the way. pikestabber
Smurfy, I live in Grand Rapids (grew up in Deer River). Do all my shrooming around here, but there are good edibles that grow all over the state. Pushbutton, JP Z, Stick in Mud, Matt Breuer and others (sorry if I missed any regulars) have really been responsible for me finally "taking the plunge" a few years back and trying some hunting out for myself. They would advise to never trust the internet or only a forum of knuckleheads like us to positively ID a shroom, but to go with someone who's experienced and soak up all you can. They do mushroom "forays" around the metro area and occasionally branch out to other parts of the state. Get some books, read these forums, and use your best judgment. If you are 99% sure, that's not good enough! I went from picking morels my whole life and ignoring everything else to learning one mushroom (Chicken of the Woods) about 4-5 years ago, to now feeling confident in picking over a dozen species and I learn more each year. As PB said, it's not rocket science. Just takes time to learn (and I have found that a loose screw helps with accomplishing many things in life ). Good luck!
