Hey guys just a heads up we are going to have a 5 tine spearing challenge this winter. There will be details soon but basically its going to be smallest fish wins and you use a 5 tine or smaller spear. Old school spearing at its finest. It should be a really fun event.

Start searching the antique stores and flea markets for spears. The older and uglier the better!

I have a few old five tines including an old walleye chute spear from the market days of the Saginaw bay, but most of michigan has a 24" min size limit so I might have to road trip to a no size limit lake to get in on this, lol!

See you there!

We happen to have a special surprise for whoever travels the furthest. It won't be much and its probably not worth it but its a good excuse to show up right???

East Central Chapter to hold First Annual “5-Tine Challenge”

Sometimes it’s good to remember the past.

On January 9th, 2016 the East Central Chapter will be hosting the first annual “5-Tine Challenge”. It’s time to take that antique spear you have hanging on the wall or sitting in the corner of the garage and put it back in play. Or get the files and the oil out and put a new edge on grandpa’s old spear hanging up in the rafters.

January 9th at Fish Lake in Harris MN, come and celebrate where we have come from as a sport and show everyone just how much fun you can have in a dark house. Help us show that we aren’t out to only spear the biggest fish in the lake.

The rules are simple

1. HAVE FUN
2. Go spear fishing with an antique spear with 5-tines or less. Lake of your choice.
3. Bring your fish, your spear, and yourself to Fish Lake in Harris by 3:00pm for weight in. SMALLEST FISH WINS!!!! Think 20” or less.

Chili and Hot Dogs to be served at 2:00pm

Weight in 3:00pm

Best Spear Contest

Presentation of Traveling Trophy at 4:00pm

So raid antique shops or look around in the barn. Dig out those old spears and join us for a day of fun and fellowship.

A little over a week to go guys.

I hear there is going to be two kinds of chili and the prize for the most beautiful spear has been acquired.

I've got my generator fueled up and wood burner ready to carve the winners name on the trophy!

Edit: You do not need a 5 tine spear to join in the fun. Stop by and eat and hang out.

  • Your Responses - Share & Have Fun :)

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
