Sorry I haven't checked in for a few weeks. I got a couple toms down and will be submitting one tomorrow!

Was hoping to hear from you soon Kevin, I figured you'd been out hunting pretty much full time. Can't wait to hear your stories.

Good luck walleyehunter! I hope a big ol' tom comes to try and kick some decoy as$.

Have you been out much DonBo? How has it been going for you?

Good luck guys!

Nope, just the couple times last week that I wrote about. Fished all weekend.

We leave for WS tomorrow night. I'll keep you updated as well as I can. Cell service sucks where we're going.

Hey team. I haven't scored yet, but will be hunting 3-4 days a week until season closes. I dedicated this week to helping a buddy get a bird with his bow and next week hopefully getting my girlfriend one as well. Monday, Tuesday and this morning were tough for us. We could not get anything but one hen to come into the decoys. we were thinking about throwing in the towel for the week.. We stopped and ate breakfast and on our travels home saw 2 birds where we had permission and they were headed to where we could cut them off. The foot race was on! We geared up and headed in. as we were sneaking in we saw the birds over a little hill 25 yards away and we thought we were busted, but with my decoy in hand my buddy sat down in the open to get ready for a shot and i scooted off to the side and kept approaching the birds. as for the rest, I will let the video tell the story! smile Enjoy! (hope i can do this right and get the video link on here)

Sorry guys, not much time to do a really good write up today, but here's a little teaser:

I will say, the bigger of these two is the largest bird I've ever taken. He's just over 24 lbs with those hooks, 1 1/2 & 1 5/8.

Unfortunately, the smaller one is the first one I shot, even though it was only by a few seconds, so under the rules of the contest, that is the one that will be registered.

Yowza - that's a stud bird Don... congrats! One more in MN for the hatrick!

I'm sure hoping, but I've already had a pretty darn good season.

Nicely done DonBo! So that leaves the team pressure on me now to get the 6th team bird.. I will do my best, but my focus will be on my girlfriend's hunt next week. It is her first hunt ever. Although if the big boy steps out i may just have to take him myself! nah. that wouldn't be fair. I have been seeing 2 big birds regularly, just got to get in front of them one of these times. Will be hunting monday thru thursdays until season closes.

Had a slow morning in the blind other than 2 hens coming through the decoys and 2 toms holding up off to our side out of sight. when the drizzle started we packed up to take a cruise and take inventory in the neighborhood. We spotted 2 tome and a hen in a place we could put the stalk on. We came over the hill and there they were 70 yards away. We were hiding behind the strutter decoy and they noticed us right away and came over for a confrontation. when he got 17 yards away she let the 20 gauge bark and she got her first turkey on her first hunt ever!

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
