fishin magician
I am looking to install some hanging garage shelves over the top of my garage doors. I have 13 foot ceilings and would like to take advantage of all that wasted space. Does anyone have any suggestions of what brands to go with? Thanks! Tom7227
Not a direct answer but I would be cautious about the amount of weight you hang. Some trusses aren't built for that kind of load.
fishin magician
Yes I agree. I was looking to put lighter objects such as coolers and stuff like that.
LightningBG
I've done them in a few of my garages. I have never had super high ceilings, so it was just one shelf. I didn't buy any name brand anything. I used wire shelving from the home imp. store and flipped it upside down. I wanted to have a lip on the front so stuff couldn't vibrate off the front of the shelf. On some I've hung the front with steel cable, but lately have been using chain going up to an eye bolt I put in the ceiling (to the bottom cord of the rafter. Nothing heavy gets put on them. Stuff like camp grills, snowmobile helmets, tents, sleeping bags, etc.
merkman
I used uni-strut, threaded rod, and melamine shelving in my garage. It has been up there for 8 years with no problems. .
311Hemi
I just built mine in the same location (above garage doors) a few weeks ago out of 2x4's with OSB on top, 24" deep. Since I didn't want the weight tied into the ceiling I used a chain at a 45* angle (multiple locations) and tied into the header. Both ends are also secured to a wall. It is pretty sturdy, but I don't plan on putting really heavy items up there.
fishin magician
Thanks for the responses. Where does a guy purchase the uni-strut setup? I have been doing some research and I think I like the Monster Rax overhead shelves. They are kind of expensive but look to be really nice. ottertailguy
I recently bought a new house with 13 foot high ceiling in the garage. Here are some pictures of the shelving above the 3rd car garage door. Just started working on organizing the garage and glad it's heated. Gadgetman
Costco sells a really nice 4 x 8 racking system that is nicely designed and assembles easy. will hold as much as you want to put on it
