Power Pro line on my bassin rods.....

Mark Christianson

Recommended Posts

Last weekend was my first real Power Pro experience.
One thing I had happen on 5 or 6 occasions, was my knot broke.
Fireline has been real good to me, and I don't recall too many break offs right at the knot like that.
Anyone else experienced this?

Maybe I should use a different knot for Power Pro? I just do the Palomer(sp?) knot.

This is my 1st year with PP. I've had no breakage, My swivel even bent once. I pulled a 5lber out of some stickd and pads, she was getting wrapped around everything.

Actually I've never had that problem with PP or Spyder. Must be defective, I'd try getting a different spool, after of course tringa new Knot.

Exude

I wonder if your onto something with it slipping out of the eye in that little gap.
All I know, is that the hook was gone, and on inspection, I had the little chunk of knot on the end of the line. But, I just assumed the line was breaking at/around the knot point.
Why don't they seal that gap off?

I have used 14lb Fireline(which is 8 lb diameter I think), and I went with the 8 lb diameter Power Pro too.

If it is going through the slit in the eye, any ideas on sealing it off? Super glue?

Where is that darn new pro staffer Ebass????
Lets get his 2 cents. wink.gif

i started using power pro last year and never had a problem with knots breaking. I use a palomar knot too. What were you fishing with? Is it possible you were getting bitten off by toothy critters? Other wise id have to say you must have gotten a bad spool or something.

Just read your most recent post sounds like the knot slipping through the gap in the hookeye to me.

Try using 30lb Power Pro and see if you have the same problem. I was using 20lb and I kept getting bit off by Pike. After I switched to 30-50lb Power Pro I have had less of a problem with it.

When did Ebass go Pro?

BLB , use the Gammi superline hooks, the eye has no gap, ever since I started using those I havent had a hook slip off yet. I quit using the palomar knot also after a few breakoffs at the knot. Started using a plain old Trilene knot and no problems. Good choice with the PP ,best braid out there.

Ebass had to buy the rights to prostaff a couple weeks ago. Now he is big time.

Basser,
Darn it! I was just at Gander. How come you didn't tell me about those hooks earlier???
I better go get some of those. That is my ticket I think.

I've had more knots come undone (palomer knot) than line breaks with braided lines. When I first started using braided I broke a couple lures off when backlashes occured, but since then I've lost a couple lures when big fish have yanked the knot right out. What other knots work good with braided?

BLB, my dad lived just north of mitchell lake. Hows the Bass fishing been in Big Lake? I havent fished there in a couple of years but we would get a few nice fish out of there, my buddy took a huge walleye (9#+) out there ice fishing 3 years ago. My little league is in a tourney there in a couple weeks so I figure to pull the skeeter up to do a little fishing between the morning and afternoon games, anywhere else near there good to give a shot , Eagle maybe? Good chatting with ya, Dan

Big LakeBASS

Just be happy that you just lost a couple of fish... There was an agler on the FLW tour that just lost $100,000 and angler of the year because his knot slipped threw the gap in the eye... I lost a fish over 10 lbs in Florida because the knot slipped threw the gap in the eye... I would bet my paycheck after reading your second post that is what happened.

2 solutions... Get superline hooks(less gap)

OR

Have some extra mono in the boat, and tie a palomar knot and cut the line just above the knot. Push the knot over so it sits where the gap of the hook is...This way the braid cant slip over to where the gap is.. This works, its what I do...

I would also be willing to bet that you were using Gamakatsu Offset hook, they seem to have the largest gap of them all...

It looks as though I need new hooks.
I use EWG Gammies exclusively. But not the superline hooks(yet).

Basser
I haven't fished bass this year on Big Lake yet.
I went out with the DNR electroshocking Big and Mitchell a few weeks ago. Tremendous numbers of bass. 4 over 19 inches. I want to say we ended up at around 150 bass/hr of shocking, which is extremely good for any lake. I haven't heard much good about Eagle.

Yee haw- do I get a prize for guessing the right hooks?... Come on its got to be worth something...

Honestly BLB-dont get rid of the hooks.. just tie that extra knot in the gap of the hook.. No need to throw all them hooks!.. Do the extra knot trick and you will never have that happen again!

I would NEVER throw a prized Gammie.
I will be using them up for sure.

Thanks very much for figuring out my crisis situation guys. I don't like losing bass, even if its just for fun. wink.gif

Hey basser
Personally I like Mitchell better than Big for the bass.

Only briad I use is powerpro... Never had a problem with knot breakage.. You sure it wasnt the knot slipping threw the gap in the eye of the hook?... Are you using a thinner LB powerpro then you were used to useing in the Fireline?

Palomar should work... another I use is a double improved clinch knot.

just as a slight counter to exude... I use the EWG Gammies with 15lb and 30 lb powerpro. Love that line. Any way, I tie a standard uni knot with 7 throws. I can tie it as quick as a any other knot and I have never had it break off...

One time i did tie a knot when i cinched it down one part of it restedin the gap. that knot was the only one i have had break.

for what its worth.

I also use the trilene knot and have never had a problem using power pro or spider wire. But man how do I love that line. It is so nice bombing those fish out of the slop with no worries of a break.

I too use PP and love the stuff. Bought some last year for a baitcasting outfit and just just set myself up with a 7'6" Shimano Clarus with a Curado and 15#PP. Wasn't sure if I wanted PP again, but glad I did.
As for knots to use, the directions in the box use palmor knots. The regular old knot typically doesn't hold.

GOOD LUCK!
