Settle a bet for me

Recommended Posts

I've been in a debate with a friend about party hunting regs and I'm hoping you guys can settle it for us.

I'll just give you the scenario and the question and then see how you guys answer.

The scenario is that we will be rifle hunting in a lottery zone and no one in our group has drawn a doe tag. My friend is bow hunting the same zone this weekend. The question is if he tags a doe with his archery tag this weekend would he still be able to party hunt with our group during rifle season? He does have a valid rifle license but his rifle tag would go unused since he'd have already tagged his one deer for the season.

Alright lets hear your thoughts on the matter. I'll chime in with both of our takes on the topic later once you guys have time to given your input.

Sure. Everyone would have a rifle license, and someone would have a tag that could be filled. As mentioned his rifle tag couldn't be used (in any one deer area.)

Well its looking good for me to get that free beer. My friend was worried he'd be done hunting for the year if he took a deer with his archery tag.

I felt the regs were fairly clear by stating that you can kill a deer as long as you have the appropriate license and someone in your group as an unused tag that is valid for the deer that was killed.

Yes he can party hunt with a rifle license. This exact topic was cleared up just a few weeks ago.

If your friend tags a deer with his archery license in a lottery zone, he is done harvesting deer in a 1-deer zone.

However, MN does allow party hunting as long as your friend has a legal license. He can purchase his Firearms license and party hunt with the group.
