Pine county taxes

Hi, two part question here, maybe three. First I'm interested in putting a hunting shack on the hunting property. I'm wondering what the Pine County tax ramifications are on my ideas.

I could bring in a cabin on skids and block up about two feet off ground. Or could pour a slab and put a cabin on the slab. Another thought I had would be to put up a pole building on poured concrete use front half for equip storage and board off the back 15 feet for a living shack area.

My idea of a hunting shack is about 14x 20 or like said about back 15 feet of barn if I went that route. I figure pole building could be about 40x50. I know I would get taxed on the barn, but do you guys in Pine county get taxed on skid type hunting shacks.

I don't believe if it's on skids that you will be taxed. Not perm then... My dad isn't on his big shed

Given the poor tax base up there you can bet that they will figure out a way to tax you. If they find it that is.

Of course there is the possibility you could go 10 years before they ever notice.

Except in these days of Google Earth, it is easy for them to find stuff like that. Friend (Crow Wing) was on phone asking questions, and they had the sattelite view up and counting his impervious surface in realtime...

But I still think I would likely do it right and spend the bucks (polebarn with semi-living quarters) or else just build a shack and bring it in during the night

Just make sure to build it to code, whatever that might be, so that if they do find it you won't have to modify it, just pay up for the permitting fees. That is what happened to me in my old cabin (my avatar image, 400 sq ft; 12x20 one room, and 8x20 porch, sitting on poured footings and 6x6 feet) - it was built before I bought, but never permitted. They made me pay for the permit when i built the new cabin, and even though I am not allowed to use it for living quarters, they added the value of it to my tax base.

Good luck. Heck, I would just put a hole in it, put it on skids,and buy a ice shelter license, therefore you are simply storing an ice shack, they can't tax that I would hope anyway!

What about the pre-made shacks on skids that someone drops on site. No water, or electricity hook up? All I want is a hunting shack.

Just build an ice house or buy a drop down. You can build almost anything you want in terms of ice house. Propane heat/lights, generators for electric, etc. Could be a real nice shack.

Make sure that you license the fish house so that if they come knocking you can prove that its a licensed fish house that you are simply storing there.

I can't imagine that you'll have many problems that way.

Not sure about this claim. Wasn't there a deal a few years ago where some folks built huge places and claimed they were fish houses? I think it was on Mille Lac or Leech.

I guess I didn't hear about that. I think the key is to make it plausible that it really is a fish house and people probably won't come poking around further.

If you are claiming a 20'x30' strucutre is a fish house you might have a hard time, but an 8'x16' skid house or Ice Castle should be easy to pass off as an ice house.

I think the key is to get the fish house license on it and make it plausible. Might not hurt to pop a few holes in the floor with hole covers as well.

I agree with nofish about the licensed as a fish house. It's not an iron clad way to keep it off the books but definitely gives you more leverage to claim "it's only temporary"

I obviously didn't make that one clear. Here I was more so referring to the building code implications. If a dropped on skid shack would be subject to building codes.
