Brand new Yamaha Overheating

My buddy has a new 4 stroke 25 hp yamaha. It goes into safe mode for overheating. He took it in and the dealer is telling him he should idle it after going wide open and to idle it a minute before taking off. I have never heard of that and I think its a bunch of garbage. Anyone else have this issue? You should be able to start it and go.

Starting an engine and then slamming into full wide open throttle is idiotic! Any engine needs a bit of warming up to get the oil and coolant moving through critical areas. An engine treated this way is going to last a lot longer.

Not to say there may not be some other problem at work here, but the likelihood a new Yamaha has a serious mechanical problem is pretty low.

Boat, car, airplane.....riding mower, wood splitter or four-wheeler....they ALL need a little warm up.

Treat your engine right and it will take care of you.

I agree with what you say. But, unless Yamaha has built some sort of break in protection into their electronics (and if they did it should be in the fine manual. You should always Read The Fine Manual, as we used to say), something is wrong and dealer is blowing smoke.

I've owned Yamaha in small and large HP and have many friends who have them. I've never had a problems with overheating nor have they. When I did the initial start up I would warm them up for a minute and then to warp speed. The rest of the day would start and go. IMO your motor has a cooling system problem.

First of all if you think about it, warming up an engine is a good thing to do before opening it up to WOT. Imagine getting in your car, starting it up, and then driving in first gear @ 6k RPM for 20 minutes straight. Pretty tough on it.

I have my Lowrance HDS hooked into the engine output through the NMEA network. It takes my Yamaha F75 about 1-1.5 minutes to get past 110F or so. Longer I guess in cold weather. So I idle until I'm at that point before I drop the hammer. Or I wait till it hits 95 or so and then slowly troll away from the dock until crossing 110F. Also their tip about letting it cool for a minute after running WOT is a good one I think, and also something I do. I want to own this motor for 20 years.

I've never had an overheat alarm though, so I'd like to hear more about that. Is the motor past the 10 hour break in period? I followed the manual to a T for that, and did the entire breakin on Leech in the first day.
