amateurfishing
I am officially in the market for a new (or used) 2 man flip over. Most likely clam or otter (I think). I want to be ready to pounce on great deals if I see any the rest of the year. My biggest concern (I was told at a show last season) is weight since I am a walker. I had looked at (and liked a lot) the X2 and such but was highly recommended the nanook and such. I know 100 or 130 lbs would be a lot to pull around (not including any gear or auger yet) but love the inside space and features of them. Is there anyone that would recommend going smaller just for ease of walking/pulling even though it did not have the interior space you preferred with a larger model? Is 130 of weight (plus equipment) not that big of a deal on snow/ice? Looking for thoughts and ideas from those who have had to ponder this before. Thanks. midwesthunter
If you are walking through snow with that heavy of a sled before you throw in all your gear its going to be a huge pain in the butt.If it were me, I would look at the Otter Cabin or Frabill Trekker Deluxe or Guardian. Seats are removable in these houses, so if its just you going, you can remove a seat and save 15+ lbs
Mid-Lake Rock
If you are not fishing with another person often I would look at a one man. I have a Clam Scout and even pulling that in deep snow can be a PITA. My brother has a two man and I pulled that once and never again. The Clam Legend is 70 lbs and the X1 is 76 lbs. I really liked the Pro, but it looks like that is off the market. If you can find one used, they are a great set up with plenty of room and weight is only 53 lbs. I went with the Scout because it has enough room for me and 47 lbs makes easy to move around.
amateurfishing
yes it is mostly me but I do dream of getting my kids involved and working on that. I have had singles b4 as well but love the space I get out of a 2 person as well as the freedom. Just looking for more space than my older 2 person Genz fish trap. I like to be open and interchangeable (1 man & 2) for personal modification purposes. I would also like some newer thermal insulation if possible to test that out and individual seats that slide front to back and swivel like clams high end ones. wyonative
I have a 2 man otter with the thermal cover and a few other extras if interested drop me a line [email protected]
rundrave
i have the nanook thermal and its a great house I am just not a fan of the seats. The one thing I like though is that I can remove one seat and slide one to the middle and it makes a great roomy 1 man shelter, but still have the option to fish 2 people if needed.the thermal is a great feature also I love it and wont go back to a non thermal house. RiverChuckNorris
I've got a Frabill Thermal Predator and with just the two removable swivel seats it probably weighs around 120 lbs. I love using it but will only pull it with two guys and even that's a pain. I bought a cheap sled to pull it.I think you're going to have to compromise one way or the other. Either a nice deep tub and roomy 2-3 man with something to pull it or a light weight, more cramped two man.I would certainly suggest trying to stay under 75 lbs at most if you plan to pull it on foot. BoxMN
Smitty sled. Must have. If pulling by hand I agree 1000%
MN BassFisher
I bought a 2 man shack while I was in CO last winter. You can only drive on like 3 of their lakes so I was mostly pulling by hand. So I was also looking for something light, I picked up the Frabill Trekker II and it's been awesome. It weighs in at about 70lbs and when I fished along I would remove one seat and cut even more weight. I was eyeing up the Thermal fabric as well but that adds more weight so I just focused on getting one of the lightest 2 mans out there and sacrificed a little condensation/heat loss. amateurfishing
Scored a brand new clam tcx thermal for $475 today, psyched for ice!
Northlander
I highly recomend the Otter Cabin. Great 2 man and roomy 1 man. Otter sled pulls nice because of the "attack angle" of the sled. Plus being able to put a Sportsmans caddy in the middle is super sweat. You can carry everything in that bad boy. I love mine.
