hi i would like to get a locator for my boat. if i buy say brand a would the mounting holes stay the same for that brand a. what i'm getting at is i don't want to drill umpteen holes in my hull as time goes by. i seen they have a mounting board you can get but i don't think it would fit very good on my boat thanks

No there is no standard mounting pattern for transducers, some brands may stay the same but there is no guarantee. Patching a hole just requires a stainless steel screw and some silicone behind it.

I don't know why a mounting board wouldn't "fit" on your boat, unless it's an inflatable. And you don't need anything fancy, just scrap piece of composite deck board or a piece of any plastic thick enough to put screws into. You can shape it however you need to make it "fit". Mine is a piece of deck board about 5-1/2" x 12" x 7/8", painted black. Works fine, lots of room to move ducers if needed.

3M adhesive 5200 or 5300 works very well for under the waterline installations. I bought some at Lowes when I mounted my structure scan 'ducer. Liberally apply on screw threads and around installation hole.

A piece of starboard (HDPE) works well for a transducer mounting board. I don't have one, but if I had rigged the original 'ducer I would have put one on.

Buy a small, plastic cutting board from the kitchen section at Target, Wally-world, etc. that is about the same size as the mounting board you need. They're about the same size and thickness as a mounting board and probably quite a bit less expensive for the same thing from a marine dealer/outdoor store. And if you have to cut it to fit, well it won't hurt so much.

I've used cutting boards on 2 boats. Never had a problem with the short screws not holding. I used the largest diameter 3/8" long pan head screw I could with some lock-tite.
