Chatterbaits?

Superduty

Recommended Posts

Brett Hite has won nearly a quarter million dollars with a chatterbait already in 2014, with a win on both the FLW series and Bassmaster Elite Series. How often do you guys throw a chatterbait? I have had success with them in certain situations but it isn't my go to bait by any means. I primarily use the original Z-Man version. Any other brands you guys favor?

Its is one of my go to baits in the spring and fall. I'm not actually a big fan of the zmans. I usually use the strike king pure poisons. I was actually fishing back in South Dakota one spring and I was using a zman chart/white chatterbait and my buddy was using a Pure poison chart/white and out fished me at least 4-1. I was baffled! Been a pure poison guy ever since. I love to throw mine with a super fluke on the back.

Weird. I had another experience last fall where 2 of us were using a pure poison and I had chart/white with gold blade and was killing them and it was my only one in that color so I but a chart/white skirt on a black head with silver blade pure poison and my buddy didn't catch a thing on it. Of course I got my only one bit off by a pike.

I've never tried chatterbaits yet. I look at them in the stores, but for some reason haven't tied one on yet. I'm guessing you use them in similar situations as a spinnerbait? Mostly in shallow water? How do they work going thru weeds? I guess I might have to try 1 each of those two brands this year.

The Pure Poison has a better hook, the Original Zman hook leaves a lot to be desired.

The Pure Poison has better components overall.

The Zman Elite Chatterbait has a better hook and better components.

I use them in the same situations as Superduty for the most part.

I also used them a lot last year on bass opener because it was such a late spring and the fish were stacked in the shallows and on the chew.

I have had moderate success in the summer throwing them around weed clumps on shallow flats.

I used one last fall when fish were really shallow and had moderate success bumping it along the bottom.

If you want the best chatterbait hands down google Karu Lures.

They make such a good Chatterbait that Zman has tried to shut them down numerous times through various lawsuits.

I started using chatterbaits about 10 years ago when they were kind of the next big thing, and boy did I get hooked. They definitely have a consistent spot in my arsenal when the conditions are right, though lately I find them to be more of a pike magnet than bass, which can get frustrating some days.

What is everyone's favorite colors? Do you go natural and imitate bluegills or crayfish? I've always leaned towards white or white/chartreuse, but I also will throw black/blue every now and then when the weather/sky just seems to give that one a better chance. One thing I know I've proven on several outings with friends was having MUCH better success with one particular color combo of the boogie tails that it comes standard with. Like I said, I like white chatterbaits the most, and for me it HAS to have a white trailer with red tips. They freaking hard to find anymore, but I know Zoom made them for a long time and I'll still see them stocked every now and then in some stores. I can't seem to find them regularly in stock online, but if you use the solid color ones I strongly recommend giving the red tips a try if you can find a pack.

I started using them 2 years ago and have had decent success but they definitely aren't a confidence bait of mine. Chartreuse/White seemed to get the most bites of the 3 colors I have. I like the added vibration they give off in murky water. I like to throw them around docks and stumps if at all possible. I like throwing them on Flouro and with the Pike loving them too I tend to lose a handful each season.

I've done the best with these in murky river back waters, several good bass an a 7lb walleye even. I love they way they hunt a bit when they swim. I've caught a lot more fish on chatterbaits than spinnerbaits the last several years.

Great northern bait in fact the first blade bait like this I saw was a larger Muskie bait.

Rick Morris is a pro that I associate with promoting and constantly using this bait before Hite's big success this year.

This bait is a great family small business success story too! I believe the original developer, Miller?, has another new lure to come out soon.

They're a very popular springtime lure out here on the Potomac. I don't use them all that often though.

I saw a new one in Walmart yesterday, made by Strike King. It wasn't the Pure Poison, I think it was called the Rage Blade? Interesting design.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
