Lake Winnipeg

Do any of you guys have a report on ice thickness and a fishing report? We are going there in 2 weeks and would like to know what to expect this year. Thanks.

I was there two weekends ago. I had my extension set to 6in and it always made it through. though just barely most of the time. Fishing was good!!!

extention length depends on how much hard pack snow is under you and how close to a ridge you are fishing. I would make sure you have at least 12 inches. Fishing is ok and getting better. With the nasty cold weather not a lot of guys have been out. We have a 3 day weekend and decent weather so you will be seeing lots of reports shortly. There are lots of Americans up from now till end of season so reports should be easy to get.

Are there resorts with plowed roads and sleepers on winnipeg? Or is it literally how fishing shows make it look…a huge lonely snowy desert?

It is the frozen tundra. Probably one of the closest analogues to the actual far north one could find. Big open, windy, no roads and GIANT greenback.

With the new snow right now your are fine with 1 extension, you can kick the snow away. After the next few days with the wind blowing and turning the snow to concrete, it might need more than a 12" extension.

One thing Lake Wpg isn't is lonely, especially if you are catching fish!

Cold day on the lake today. Wind would not let up. Went out with a local guide in his track truck, what a treat that is! Hit several spots from 12 to 16 feet. Lots on the flashers, could only manage four eaters today. Still a good day in my books. Very peaceful day.

heading up Friday morning. Where is a good place to stop and get a license/bait/tackle on the way to the casino? Going to be cold looking at the forecast and hopefully we dont have any problems with the slush!

Couple good options... Pro-am tackle on narin is always my first stop. Bob and Brett are great. The fishin hole on regent in a pinch, or the sportsmans corner on hwy 59 on the way to the casino. Fas gas in Selkirk too.

Watch for slush near the pressure ridges. I didn't see any anywhere else in our travels on Sunday.

The slush is hidden. Just be careful around ridges if you have a tracked quad or utv. I did have my jackall tipped with a head, and just wiggled it. You can't really rip them hard if they are tipped, but it can work for neutral fish. Salted work fine, up to you if you want live. Pro am has good livies.

we were up there last weekend. there was a ridge a mile or so NE of the mouth that had some slush. also fished balsom bay and did not see any slush there. cold as hell but we did alright for not being able to move around as much as we would have like to due to the weather. Live target with a minnow head or even a whole minnow under it. those hogs just crush it!

also, we stopped at pro am for our licenses and other supplies. that guy is great and knows his stuff. Next time I will skip getting live bait and just use minnows froze in coke. they worked just as well as the live ones and easier to deal with. Might be heading up again in a couple weeks.

Live bait is a pain in the but up there if you ask me. alot of people use salted minnows but after a couple days of handling these big fish getting poked and scratched by gills and fins and hooks my fingers have little nicks and scratches all over them (I also have dry skin this time of year and sometimes have cracked skin on my hands). Handling salted minnows is not fun when you get salt in the wounds. I take those little snack size ziplock bags and put about a dozen or so fatheads in each bag and just a little bit of coke to cover them. Lay all the bags flat on a cookie sheet and put them in the freezer. The nice thing about coke is it does not freeze solid so it is easy to grab one out of the slushy coke while fishing. only down side is your fingers get a little sticky but I can deal with that. when I am fishing then, I will take a few minnows out of the coke, rinse them in water so not sticky, pinch them in half and put them in a bait puck with just a little splash of water (enough so they dont get dry and stick to the puck) and put the puck in a pocket on my bibs so always have bait handy even when out hole hoping. last weekend, I was using minnow heads and the tails . at least one piece of meat on the front and the back hook of a live target because they fall off easy with no barbs. Those greenbacks CRUSHED it!

So why are the minnows frozen in coke? Is that so you have something to drink after it melts?

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
