gas spout laws

I've read it time after time...I REALLY hate these new gas cans. Mine spills more gas on my equipment then I put "in" my equipment. I'm always checking Craig for older ones and even garage sales. I resorted to YouTube to modify them...works better but still leaks.

Anyone have a good solution? I'll pay good money for something that works. I heard you can by military cans but haven't found any yet. About to switch to the blue water cans but not sure how the gas will affect the plastic... and I could care less about the "law" at this point.

Rant over!

You are kidding ? There is a law about gas can spouts now ??

Dunno if it's a law, but certainly there is a trend to have these new funky pour spouts. This is due to lawsuits, even though the news story I saw about it said most of the incidents that have happened have happened when refueling hot equipoment.

Was sort of funny and pathetic at the same time. The woman relaying most of the story ends with "you should never refill equipment when it's hot". One of the anchors says "Well, that's kind of a statement of the obvious." Thought to myself, apparently it's not too obvious if most of the incidents have occured while refueling hot equipment.

I forget the exact details but it was something like 1200 ER visits and 10 or 12 fatalities in the last 15 years. Sure, it's bad when any number happen, but consider what must be many, many, millions of gas can refuelings in the last 15 years, it seems the incident rate is very low and the risk overblown. IMO, of course.

To fix the plastic "safety" cans fleet farm sells a kit with 2 screw on nozzles and 2 drill in air holes with caps...$10. You can find them in the same area as the gas cans smile. Quick and easy fix only drill one hole and your back to freely pouring fuel like God intended.

"you should never refill equipment when it's hot"

Yep, obvious.....until you've got a gas water pump pumping water out of a trench that guys are working in and you need to keep the pump going for their safety........uh oh guys the pumps outta gas, we' d like to keep going but we got to let it cool down. Hmmmm looks like you'll get to be waist deep in water now.

Fleets are $10. the video show the air stem, you don't need to modify the spout. Just put in the stem for a vent. I get old style spouts from the landfill, they have programs to use as much old stuff as they can and gas cans are something they save, at least around here. If the can is bad just toss it and save the spout.

I have 4 of the older good ones but 1 of the newer cans. I just made a vent with the tire stem and it's good to go.

Leave to our lame elected officials to come up with this new gas can garbage. Better they do nothing as they typically only screw things up that they work on.

this is it and i love it going on three years old and does not leak a drop until i push the button to let the gas out

Do these pour quickly? Another thing with those others is that it takes an hour to dump 6 gallons.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
