Trips for spring

So might as well get this going. I know it will just make me feel crappy I have to wait so long until March. But what are you plans for the spring turkey hunts?

Going to start off with NE the end of March

Come back to hunt MN (if drawn)

Head out to SD for a quick hunt

WI the end of April (1st tag of WI)also the girlfriends first hunt ever.

MO the start of May

WI for the last hunt of the spring for 6 days

The season just will not come fast enough been looking at new vest. Sending in a blind to get repaired my friend teenage son used last MN bow season last spring and he messed a few rods. No biggie lifetime warranty so fix is nothing to big.

Already line up some more land for my first hunt in WI so new land and old should be a great spring. grin

6 hunts? I am so jealous. I never liked you. grin

Be just MN and WS for me. I'll probably do the womens mentored hunt again.

I have no idea what my work schedule will look like yet, so unfortunately I have no idea what my spring will be like.

I really want to head to Nebraska and with the season long tag I should be able to find a few days to run down there.

MN is always a crapshoot. I used my points to get an "A" tag last year so likely will do bow hunting this year.

Sorry Don , The spring is just too much fun for me to be in the woods. Now the girlfriend wants to take a turkey so that just gives me more time in the woods. grin

Nice thing about WI you can keep getting tags as long as there some left over. I'm all out of turkey from last spring and fall so now I need to stock back up.

Don Im very jealous of all the fall birds you get to chase around SD.

laugh

My Mn tag I never really get to hunt them because same land I hunt deer so I just take what I get when they come by in stand.

I had a FLORIDA trip all set up but work has made that not possible, so my Grand Slam must wait one more year. However I am still going to manage my MN hunt, two trips out to So Dak, and trying to get the wife to the point where possibly by next year she can go with to finish our slams together?!

I hope you get to fill that next year. I'm still working on this to fill mine just never can get the time for that hunt yet.Thinking of doing that one with my old man hope we can both fill at the same time.

I'm cool with snow just not as much as we had in SD last spring the drifts up to my waste and snow in the woods over the knees. Just made you over heat and sweaty too easy. I'll take 6-8 inches over that.

One of my favorite snow pics.

Hope we can keep up all the turkey talk for few months. grin

Great picture Hoyt. I am trying to pull off a NE trip for a couple days, MN for sure, and probably WI. If all swings well I may be able to hunt all three.

Can't wait! How did I go 20 plus years with such a long break from hunting. This turkey thing is addictive!

If I had to give up all hunting but one thing. Turkey hunting would be what I keep doing.

You will love NE

Awesome picture Hoyt! I am extremely bummed I won't make Florida this spring as I had it planned but next year is a go. Early spring is a blast even with that snow but man it makes staying mobile difficult. I've never spent much time in NE other than the Santee area so sometime I need to look into hunting other areas there being so close. Kansas is a blast though! I definitely have WI on my radar next spring as well. I want to go for the whole slam in a year next yr so we shall see how things pan out?!

Add me to the list that has the turkey itch....I hope the weather cooperates for you guys up north. My only obstacle will be leaving for camp on easter sunday. I hope the kids find all the eggs fast so I can get out of the house and up to my camp hunting northern MO.

Shot it off. Full decap on the hit.

Many guys hunt turkeys using their regular deer braodheads. Others use different broadheads such as large diameter mechanicals that they may not use for deer or aren't legal for deer in states like MN because they are bigger than 2".

I prefer to use the headshot type broadheads. I really like the Magnus Bullheads. They take a little tweaking to figure out, but the good news is a proper hit means a dead bird and a miss or body hit means the bird lives.

I don't judge the guys who take body shots with regular broadheads. It does work, but I've chased after too many birds that were hit wrong. I've lost one of my own. With the headshots, you aim for anywhere on the head and neck and a hit means a dead bird with no tracking. I don't feel it makes things any more difficult, but I think the knowledge of a sure kill makes it worth it.

I use full length arrows and they fly great. I tried the Victory ones they sell with the heads and those do well. I also fletched some full length Gold Tips with 4- 5" vanes and that works really well too and they aren't as fragile or noisy as the feathers. I can split hairs at 20yds and a 2.5" cut zone.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
