jerkbait rod

What do you guys prefer for a jerkbait rod? I had a 6'6" MH BP rod that worked okay until it broke earlier this year and I'm in the market for a new rod. I prefer jerkbaits on spinning gear. I feel I just have more control with it. I tried using some of my current rods a 6'6" & 7'0" Med, fast taper but it just felt a little mushy to me and 7'0" felt a little long. What is your guys preference both hard and soft jerkbaiting?

I use two different rods for different size jerkbaits. Both are casting rods, just my preference. For smaller baits (LC 76 pointers) I use a 6'6" M fast with a shimano citica 100d. Casting distance is not an issue with this setup. For larger baits (LC 100 pointers and similar) I use a 7' MH fast action. Both rods I use 10 lb copoly.

Id do prefer the 6'6" rod for working jerkbaits but my rods need to pull multiple duties so 7' it is.

For soft jerk baits like Flukes, I would say a 7' MH Spinning rod. I just have a much easier time twitching Flukes with a spinning rods and I like a faster tip better. I do like twitching flukes...

Deitz your a shimano guy. I was specifically looking at the 6'10" MF crucial spinning jerk before I posted. I didn't see a Cumara jerkbait rod on Shimano's HSOforum. How does the Cumara compare to the Crucial?

I would have to look, not sure if they make a spinning cumara reaction. A cumara is a step up from the crucial. But also about double the price.

I just looked, they make a 6'8" spinning dropshot rod in a cumara that would work, but its not listed as a jerkbait rod. The crucial rods are nice for the money! The 6' 10" would be nice if you are tall enough and your boat high enough off the water.

For smaller jerkbaits like slender Points and Pointer 75s, which I used a lot for smallies, I use a 7' ML X-Fast spinning rod and 10# fireline, with a fluoro leader. I can cast a mile, and because of the braid still feel fish and the bait, and have control over what the bait is doing. I like the extra length on a 7' rod since I'm in a deep V with higher decks, and since I'm usually using this in open water away from cover, the braid and spinning gear is more than enough power-wise.

For bigger baits or for around cover (docks, rushes, over weedbeds) I use a Powell Jerkbait rod from Tackle Warehouse, which is a 6'10" glass/graphite composite. (They're actually on sale right now.) I also use the rod for topwaters like poppers so it's spooled with 14# mono. It's nice to have a little more power when you're wrestling a fish away from cover.
