mrpike1973
i mostly have fished sunnies and pike some crappies. thought i might try the night walleye or crappie bite. is this mostly a hour after dark or all night i know many factors here but i figure i miss a lot of fishing sitting in the house at dark. thanks
BrandonJ
Kind of a lake to lake thing, but a lake like tonka or mille lacs the bite can really turn on anytime of the night mainly walleye, crappies and pout. But yeah some lakes can be a complete waste of time at night on the other hand too. Pretty sweet when a spot goes from nothing to a chrisrmas tree after dark though and you can time it night after night. It always surprises me how many people bail at sunset out on the ice, sunny and pike guys I guess.
Down Deep
Your guess is as good as any. I've had some good walleye and crappie bites on Red, but on LOW, where I had a wheelhouse for 5 years, the night walleye bite was almost zip. Local lakes around Duluth can produce night bites on any given night. If I get out after 2 PM I usually pack it in by 10PM. If I start in the AM I've usually had enough by 6:00 pm unless there is good reason to stay.
Brad B
some of my best crappie bites have been like around midnight to 2 am. like was stated already it varies from lake to lake and the time of the year(early ice vs later ice). fishing pressure will also drive part of it. the simple suggestion I have is to think out side the box and step out side your comfort zone and try new tactics (example : if you live bait fish try some plastics instead). Rick G
Some days I'm off the ice right after dark, some nights it is 11-1, it all depends on what I'm fishing for and how they are biting.
servocam
Usually only to about 11 or 12 for crappies.

20lbSloughShark
I've never really tried, but from all the times I've fished at night I have never caught a pike after dark, neither has anyone I've talked to in person. Crappie and walleye are the typical night biters, however, I've found sunfish will bite all day and night. It seems sunset and sunrise are hot bites, as well as just after midnight. If your after pike, your chances are better at winning the lottery. If you're after walleye, I'll take 12 am over 12 pm any day. 99% of the time I head in when I have to, not when I want to. Stick in Mud
In my experience, it usually boils down to water clarity. Clear lakes tend to have a bite that can go well into the night or all night. Mille Lacs is one example. Dirtier lakes like Lake of the Woods will usually turn off at dark. This isn't always the case, but I've found it a pretty consistent rule of thumb.
Finlander
Fishing in my permanent house and staying over night, I always have a line in all night long. Rattle reel or a rod with a bobber line set in a good holder gets good results. I caught my biggest walleye with that combo at 6:30am when I was woken up by my rod banging against the wall and proceeded to pull in a 29.5" walleye! The same rod I caught a 18" walleye just before I went to sleep that night!
TruthWalleyes
I've had sprees at all times of the day & night. All depends on when and where and weather conditions. I fish when I want to fish, how long I want to fish, and go home when I feel like it. Which can vary from 2 hrs to 5 days in my portable. Usually don't let weather effect my decision to stay or leave. And every now and then even a blind squirrel can find a nut
Fowlmouth
There is no real answer to this.. I stay till the fish stop bitting, when I have to leave due to other plans, when I get bored. But usually in my portable i'll stay about an hour after dark. When I'm in the crank down i'll stay over night.
