GSP4ME
i was just at Gander and was looking at the new flashers. Why does the Fl28 vibrate? So its not truly digital? I am not trying to start any argument just curious as to why. I have a Marcum Lx7 and like how quiet it is and no vibrate. Just wondering
hamms-scooter
The flx28 is still a mechanical wheel isn't it?
CaptainMusky
Its a "brushless" design.
GSP4ME
ok guess I am not sure what the heck brushless is, makes me think of a car wash. so basically Vex isnt jumping into the digital where Marcum is?
JSK76
Old motors used brushes new motors are starting to use new technology with reversing the wire coil and magnet position on the motor. The 28 still has a motor just a different style then before.
aquafang
I have owned and used both vexes and marcums. I have become a Marcum fan over Vexilar. They are both very good units. But Marcum is much more advanced in the aspect of options and you get more for your money. Here's the way i see it.....They both catch fish. Everyone has their preferences. I'll admit my marcums probly wont mark any more fish than a vex, i just prefer Marcum.
tsande00
If given the choice between an LX7 or FL28, side by side, I honestly can't think of a good reason somebody would grab the vex other than brand loyalty. Even then, it's gotta sting when you see your buddy enjoying his digital LX7 which is superior in almost every way possible. That said, I'd be happy with either because both are better than what I'm currently using! But if I was forking out money it certainly wouldn't be for another analog motorized flasher. Jigging Joe
The lx-7 is heavy, awkward to carry, and doesn't have near the battery life. Other than that I love mine, its the perfect in-house unit. I'm looking to get another flasher so when the kids go with they have one too. I want to get another brand other than Marcum so they don't interfere, looking at a vexilar. I've had a hummingbird and loved almost everything about it except when the bottom flashed a little, when I had my vexilar it meant a fish was about to appear but with the hummingbird no fish would show. This post is all MY OPINION, not trying to turn this thread into a [PoorWordUsage] match....
clayton08
Both companys make great units there will always be this argument. As far as the Fl28 vibrating I dont know why that would be and it was probably very slight. I know that there are not any brushes as its all digital now. I own a 22, 18 and a 8 so obiously Im a vexilar man. I did however buy a marcum showdown 5.6 dual beam last year got a good deal on it in a trade and tried it out. I did not like it at all it was weird for me and had trouble picking up my #12 tungstens and small panfish jigs. Sold it to a buddy and he loves it as he is a walleye fisherman for the most part and can always see his jig. Its a horse a peice they all work and the lx7 is a pretty nice peice of equipment. PurpleFloyd
It seems to me that Vexilar is pricing their new flasher pretty high for what you get. If you look at the price points the 28 is priced right there with the LX7 and it looks to me like there are more features and more value with the LX7. The most comparable Bird/Marcum flashers are the 55 and LX5 and they are hundreds of dollars cheaper than the 28 and I am not seeing 200 dollars or 40% more flasher or features to justify the cost. Alternatively I am looking for a new unit and I am getting ready to pull the trigger on the Lowrance elite 5 Ice Machine. They are on sale for about 475 dollars and the features they have in that package are just what I am looking for. They have a better graph display than the LX6 and 7 and are a more proven design and they don't limit you to the noisy wheel the Vex has with no graph option. These days I think you need to give more features and performance for the lowest price and to me that is Lowrance or even one of the bird units converted to an ice unit like the 597. maxpower117
Quote:This post is all MY OPINION, not trying to turn this thread into a [PoorWordUsage] match.... Zzzzip.I have fished with both. Both work very well, usually. Marcum is far more advanced but it comes with baggage. The release of the LX7 is proof. It was plagued with software glitches. That risk will always remain with a unit like that. Software updates??? My vex never has to be brought into the house to be updated?!. On long trips, I can leave it run for about 36 continuous hours. I can read my FL20 in any light. Sun behind me or wherever. Weighs 1/2 of LX7 and god knows how much less than the 9. Separation? I can regularly see when he minnow head falls off my Swedish pimple. You guys can have those clunky, quality plagued units. And btw, marcum ownership seems to change every year. No wonder there are quality issues. I have heard they have great customer service though. Nobody knows what Vexs cs is like. Zzzip.
Jigging Joe
One area where the lx-7 shines is target separation. When I lift my jig just a little off the bottom I see it where as the hummingbird and vexilar at times need 4" or maybe more to see it, I haven't noticed that with the lx-7. Why is that, has other people noticed that? Also, I was using a vexilar fl-8, has this issue been fixed on the newer model vexilars?
morepower02
A lowrance or humminbird color unit with internal gps makes a Vex or Marcum obsolete to me.
CaptainMusky
Max, marcum hasn't changed ownership just partnership with rapala. Do some research.
Esox_Magnum
Max I see the updates as a vauble tool, beasicly in a few minutes I have the same updated machine in my 3 year old unit as the new one sold today instead of having to buy a whole new unit....As for weight your miss informed the 7 head unit weight is the same as any Vex head maybe even lighter, majority of the weight is the battery....I would assume Vex has many returns a season since they have reconditioned units...I have used both CS and Marcum has always done me better than Vex....As also was stated yes theres a delay on a Vex when lifting off the bottom, we confirmed this with use of a camera...Morepower, personaly I have no use or desire to have a GPS on my dedicated ice unit nor do I have the want or desire to outfit my HDS I use for GPS into an ice unit... Esox_Magnum
Why?? I dont need both at one time and in many cases both are needed at the same time in different spots...I have 6 GPS units around dont need
morepower02
Hey whatever works for you. I like having both in one unit. Carting it on the ice, front rack of a wheeler or set on the dash of the truck. Fallow the map and get out with the same unit and fish is a no brainer for me. Esox_Magnum
Yep I do the same with my GPS but once there it stays there.
