Fat on deer this year vs. other years

The ones that ate the most and moved the least had the most fat, we checked the wear on the hooves. Fat= no timberwolves Lean= wolves runnin em. jk, I haven't ever really noticed any difference have seen easy winter deer taken in the previous fall with tons of fat and the same with tougher winters/springs, it varies deer by deer, no excuses to not load up they have acorns,apples,alfalfa,corn,beans, you name it at their disposal all night long every fall part of why winter kill isn't as noticeable in ag lands, however now all of that has been buried for a long time now and will continue to be buried into mid-march, have heard March 8th, 30 degrees ! Almost to the average !

our doe that we took in Iowa had a good 2-3" of fat on her, the bucks, had some fat, but there were recovering still from the rut, more fat on the bucks than other years.....we did notice on a couple drives that there some HUGE squirrels there as well. We usually thin the squirrels down every fall, but there were some monsters moving around a couple of the woods draws we drive

A buddy of mine's wife shot a fawn late season bowhunting that had very little if any fat. This was north of Brainerd. Not a great acorn year in the area.

We shot a doe in the Cumberland, WI area that had a solid 2-3" layer of fat over her entire body. I've never seen even 25% as much fat on a deer in my life. Looking back I wish we would have put her on a scale.

Did she have fawns with her? Last winter/spring was pretty brutal and she could have aborted her fawns then. That would have given her an easy summer to get fat.

I skin 3-5 deer a year every year and I hardly ever see much for a difference other than a Sept deer to a Nov deer or Dec deer.

I took an old doe with almost no teeth that was the fattest deer I have ever taken!

This doe had twin fawn with her and was taken in the Willow River area during the rifle season.

I saved the fat to put out for the birds in the winter and couldn't believe how much I got.

Saw a ton (hundreds) of deer today traveling the Minnesota River Valley from Mankato to west of New Ulm. All fatties...they look like plump butterball turkies.
