Gun of choice for deer this year?

Recommended Posts

Oh man, that brings back memories. Had a 721 in 300 H&H way back in the late 50's in AK. That was a very nice shooting gun, just the way it was, without a scope or any accessories. Smooth recoil, accurate enough, and in the 300H&H it was a pretty handy tool for tramping the woods and tundra.

Too basic, plain and simple for today's huntin' guys I'm afraid, but one helluva dependable rifle. And Egads...when was the last time you heard anybody mention a 300 H&H magnum. But it was a SERIOUS cartridge.

Browning 300 mag semi auto for me.

My son who is 10 will be using his new .270!

How does your son do with his .270. He's shooting a youth model I am guessing? Thinking that I will be getting a .270 for my son next year as he should be grown enough to handle the recoil and not be afraid of the gun. He's throwing lead downrange with a .243 this year.

most manufactures offers low recoil for the .270. i've had a chance to shoot sum 115gr and they have about the same kick as a .243 IMO. maybe lil more but not by much

you could pick up the .270 now, used low recoil rounds until he's a lil bigger and then jump up to reg rounds.

that way he'll have more time with the gun and there's not much in North America a .270 wont take dwn

sidenote,

i built a remi BDL 700 .243, had it for yrs. hand loaded with 105 Noslers partitions nvr had a problem taking dwn a deer.

a lil on the heavy side but it wrked great for yotes/prairie dogs w 60gr ballistic rnds =D

man do i miss that gun, shouldve nvr sold it. smh

Yep, going to SW Wisconsin for 6 days by myself, should be wild. I will be bringing a gun my grandfather gave to me, an original Remington A303 .30-06 with peep sight for up to 100YD, it's killed many a deer. I am also bringing my buddies Remington 7mm Mag for those long shots if I set up by a field. Shooting cheap 'ol core-loks in both, 150grain because it's hard to find anything else for the 7mm where I live!
