1972 Chevelle Wont Start - Help

Recommended Posts

Alright,

My Chevelle is giving me some issues. earlier it would start turning the key but sometimes it would take several attempts at turning the key to engage the starter. Now it does not engage at all. It will turn over by jumping the starter terminals. I have tried to adjust the ignition switch and nothing. The dash lights will light but no click or engage from the starter. I will be getting a new ignition switch this week to try. Any other suggestions?

thanks for the help in advance

Alright I did some more checking on the car. The starter is good and the ignition switch is good. When i turn the key forward to engage the ignition switch it does not have the "strength" to engage. It feels like the rod is giving inside the column. If I engage the switch by hand everything turns over. I am assuming I will need to pull the steering wheel and go inside the column at this point?

If I remember correctly the neutral lockout is usually a linkage that connects to the column and causes the key to not be able to turn when it is in gear. If you can understand my description, try grabbing the lower collar on the column (where the shifter would be if it were a column shift). and turn it as if you are putting it in park, the ignition should work then .....unless it is no longer adjusted properly.

Great car. The first car I bought myself out of High School was a 72 Chevelle SS and it is still the favorite vehicle I have ever owned. What motor do you have in it?

It could possibly be a linkage problem that you are having, I have also seen some issues that act like you are talking about when there are issues with the flywheel

The key will turn freely but the rod that goes from the key to the ignition switch under the dash does not seem to be pushing hard enough to engage the switch. Its like it gives inside the column by the key instead of pushing force on the ignition switch enough to engage the starter.

I currently have a 383 Stroker in it. My Chevelle is also my first car. Although it was over 30 years old when I bought it smile

Did you try turning the collar on the column before turning the key?

If you have it disconnected it may have turned slightly so it's not allowing the actuator rod to move freely, or you may have broken the small cast aluminum piece that connects to the ignition tumbler.

Is this a stationary or a tilt column?

I tried moving the collar and still have no luck. the actuator rod moves enough to light the dash lights up but does not push far enough to engage the starter. The ignition switch is moved as far up as it can be.

Do I need to now go into the column itself by removing the steering wheel? If so what will I find / be looking for?

thanks for the help.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
