miltona

Sometimes I wish miltona had a face that I could punch. Yesterday was one of those days. I was out from morning to late afternoon, casting/trolling, shallow/deep. Not one musky even sighted all day. On the plus side I did catch 2 northerns that were each upwards of 19-20", so I had that going for me. That is all, thank you for giving me a place to vent.

Hahaha... Sorry to laugh, but sometimes venting is all you can do. Muskies are right up there with smallmouths when it comes to being able to to do a Houdini and disappear.

I have always kind of thought the two weeks around Labor Day can be some of the toughest of the season because it can really be boom or bust - lake's changing, every critter in the lake is in the beginnings of a seasonal transition, and they can be all over a spot like ants one day, and gone the next day - or the next hour.

Plus, there's just the fact that they may not be biting and there's nothing you can do about it. One of my favorite fishing quotes is from Al Lindner: "When they don't wanna, they don't wanna."

I figure stuff like that always evens out eventually. You suffered that day, but sometime in the future you'll catch 5 in an afternoon.

On the days when I fry, I always remind myself I could be at work instead. smile

I was on Miltona last Friday. I got one small one (sub 40 never measured) and had a few other follows. I hadnt been out in a while and didnt know what to expect water temps wise until I got out.

Well, to my dismay the water temps were 82!!!! The coolest I found was near 79. Needless to say that put me off big time and I didnt try very hard.

A well-known guide was out there and from what I hear he has been having similar "success" so you are not alone. :-)

Hearing about guides fishing in 82 degree water just makes my day.
Yeah, especially when I know of other guides who were on the water in the same area with equally high water temps and those folks were VERY outspoken about fishing in high water temps. This person even went on to call people who fish in water temps over 78 degrees "hacks".

Kinda makes you wonder.

In all honesty though I am sure they take whatever precautions (like fishing early, taking breaks during heat of day, etc) they can and handle the fish much better than most.

I don't think it's so much of an ego thing, more like trying to make a living and booking as many trips as they can. I will give them a break.

Most guides are qualified to fish when the water is over 80 degrees, especially this year when they have only been that high for a little while.

I dont have a problem with someone making a living, but when they make comments about someone being a "hack" because they are out there fishing when water is over 78 degrees and blah blah blah, claiming they NEVER do that, when in fact they are....

That's what I have a problem with.

I do agree though that in MOST cases they are properly prepared and take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the fish. I have seen pictures of guys swimming with fish and bringing them down to deeper/cooler water.

No guarantee it works, but it does look as though they are trying.

Yeah, it seems to have cooled off well, if I remember it was only 73 when I got out there and warmed up to 75-76 by the afternoon. At any rate I certainly wasn't putting any fish at risk that's for sure! Lol

Miltona in general can be an absolutely maddening... or it can be very generous...

I've had weeks out there without seeing a single fish. Then I've had other days where I'm not even fishing hard and the muskies are everywhere!

My #1 thing to do when having a tough time finding muskies on miltona is to fish the western bay... There are always lots of small fish in there to catch and they will give you an idea of what and how they want to eat.

It's the "practice bay"

Agreed....don't call people out then go out and do it yourself. I remember when this happened, didn't he then claim to be fishing for northern??? Lol. Now that sounds like a hack!!

That's pretty warm for this weekend. I was just over the border in Wisconsin and had 74.5 for a surface temp both Sunday and Monday. Only a couple lookers though. Did get a 34" pike in about 3 feet of water. A decent pike in shallow water is always a good sign that fall action will be heating up soon.

So now there are rules on when you can fish for muskies according to water temp!!! You guys crack me up. Fish when you can and enjoy the sport! Please remember guys- It's just a fish!!!! LMAO grin

If your saying I'm more important than the off chance if I land a fish in high water temps and it has a CHANCE of dying....The answer is YES. Remember it's just a fish, you guys tend to forget that. It's not a person or your favorite pet, just a fish......

comments like this prove what's entirely wrong with society these days. Think of themselves versus anyone else, entitlement yada yada yada. The reason YOU even have the "off chance" of catching a fish in high water temps are because of simple management practices by "guys like us".

RumRiverRat,

In response to you, are some musky guys arrogant? You betcha! Does that not apply for fisherman of other species as well??? By far, some of the worst I have encountered have been fisherman of other species. And what about the spearers??

Muskies ARE special.

I don't necessarily think it is belittling to question someone fishing muskies in water that is so warm, it appeared as if it was calling out someone that was not practicing what they were preaching. And some people may not know the potential for how hazardous it can be to fish in those conditions. A little education never hurts.

And yes, because of a lot of die-hard musky guys are so careful with the resource, it does give other people the chance to catch those mythical fish.
