gps rebooting when starting motor

largemarge

Question

gps is rebooting when cranking mercruiser i/o. is it recommended to separate electronics on another battery instead of same battery for all? there is no trolling motor as a kicker is present. Or, is battery not large enough to sustain the power to the GPS when starting large motor? bigger battery?

Your battery voltage is dropping below the minimum required for your gps. Could be that your battery is wearing out, it happens. Most guys run their electronics off their starting batteries but running a separate battery is an option.

i was thinkng of just getting a new one anyways for a "backup". incidentally, the battery was dead when we arrived, so I charged partially overnt and from the alternater on the I/O. the battery was installed new on 6/2011. I suppose I could run them both in line then. i think that would resolve the issue. sux when you are ready to go to the next "hotspot" and have to reboot each time after a start.

I totally agree with your assessment of the problem!!! If I don't charge my starting battery before I go out it kicks the gps everytime unless I run a long ways. It seems to charge the battery and I don't seem to have the problem with the gps. Good Call, Good Information!!!

I would not connect a old battery to a new battery, the charging rate for the old one is different than the new one. When the new one is charged the old one might only be half charged. On some sonars you can change the low voltage setting on the sonar.

Check connections and make sure battery is charged up good. Mine will do the same if I dont keep my batteries charged up when using the bowmount all day and not giving the big motor a chance to charge it up.

Could this be the same as running a radio in a car? When you turn the key all electrical things turn off to divert all of the available current to the starter.

My outboard doesn't do this to my knowledge but maybe an inboard does.

I had the same problem with my Lowrance 522 and my 4.3L Mercruiser. I rewired it with a dedicated 12 gauge wired circuit and a new starting battery. The problem was not solved.

I then moved the circuit over to one of my 12 volt trolling batteries, the problem has been solved for four years now.
