That is not chicken of the woods. It's most likely a pheasant back mushroom, also known as dryad's saddle. They are edible, but just barely in my opinion due to how tough they are. I don't bother to pick them. If you do want to try eating it, though, don't take my word for it as there is no way to tell 100% what it is from a picture over the internet.... All I can give you is my best guess.

Indeed a pheasant back... Nice one at that.

Chickens are not a fall only mushroom, they come out in June, and flush when the conditions are right all the way through the fall. People are finding flushes of COW now in the Metro.
