Goodbye Tubby, Hello.....??/ Rich Pitino

His name got him the FIU job. He's in the bigs now, he needs to prove he belongs. His name may give him opportunities but landing at a bigger program, well his record will determine that. If you think otherwise then you're just wrong. Pat Knight went from Texas Tech to Lamar, I wonder why he didn't land at a major program? You also switched your tune from high profile to a better program, conceding a little? You have no clue what you are talking about, pack it up you're in a box.
agree 100%.

Getting his initial division 1 job may have been because of his name but regardless of what you say strikeout, he will not move on to an elite program without some sort of results here in MN. Tubby only lands a job now because of winning at Kentucky with someone else's guys. He didn't land that Texas Tech job because of what he did here. If he didn't do anything at Kentucky his career would have ended here.

You use Pat Knight as a comparable and pick apart my sentences in a weak attempt to show that I'm conceding yet I'm the one in a box?

Doh-kay. crazy

Pat Knight, Bobby Knight's son? Pretty good comparison when talking about father and son coaches, is it not? You make the notion that I'm the one on something but you continue to make zero sence. The only thing you got one up on me seems to be a better dealer.

Juice and I have had our disagreements in the past (re: Tubby), but I gotta go with his analysis on Rich. Rich is high enough that he is going to have to produce here or he doesnt move on. Pat Knight was a perfect example. Texas Tech to Lamar is not moving up. He couldnt win at the TT level and went backwards, yet had all the pedigree (ie name recognition) in the world.

Here is a pie in the sky optimistic stretch for ya. he does well, we get a practice facility and he becomes so enamored with ice fishing that he stays! whistle

Um, FYI Pat Knight was fired.

Good grief.

Point being? Either way you look at it Lamar isnt a step up, regardless of whether or not he was fired by Texas Tech or moved on his own.

I notice he really turned around Lamar this year. 23-12 in the 11/12 season to 3-28 for 12/13 season. OUCH!!!

Dude, you continue to make no sense. You're then one saying how important the name is. The name didn't save him or land him anywhere better like you think will happen to Jr regardless of how he performs. Just stop it already, I serious hope youre doing your best Skip Bayless impersonation here.

It's LMITOUT that is usually what he does. I would say most on these forums have had an exchange or two just like this with him over the years! I am trusting Teague on this one and hopeful that we are getting a rising star. I would say that the perfect scenario is 6 good years with his current contract, which may be enough for his Dad to have had enough, so Rich can take over for Rick. Hopefully by then, the MN job will be more attractive. I look at it like there are only a few premiere jobs in the country-- Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, Florida, Indiana being the first tier of the list-- after that it is a dump shoot and all about landing the right one or two recruits. Other jobs have some positives too-- USC and Arizona are attractive to recruits.. Ohio State draws from some great areas for recruiting and Oregon seems to have an endless supply of Phi Knight's $$$ for just about everything so that is a plus for some coaches. It will be interesting to see what happens. Rich will win more fans over right away with just his personality AND if he can land at least one of MN's big three.

Love this exchange between Lmitout n Dr. Juice...good stuff and I think Lmit lost this argument!! Pitino needs to suceed to move up but if we get a practice facililty and he makes it into a competitive big 10 program who's to say he moves? Maybe just maybe he figures out that suceeding in MN can immortalize you in this state and if you win you can bring in good recruiting classes and compete for a big 10 title year in and year out. Winning changes all views of a program and if they can compete finishing in the top 1-5 spots in the Big 10 for 2-3 years in a row the recruiting will get easier for him.

I really don't think hes in it for 2-3 years. I think hes a perfectionist. I think hes going to have a few bumps in the road but he has a good backcourt and Ellison needs to step it up in a starters roll next year and there is hope. He'll run a decent record, get recruits and in 5-6 years be able to build up enough credibility to move on if he wants but as we saw this year, those young solid coaches for the most part stayed with their quote "smaller" program. If Jr can build a solid contender top 3 in the Big 10 then why would he go? He just needs to pick up a fishing pole and he wouldn't want to leave.

The problem with MN is that too many people who live here think this way. smile All it will take is a fat check and an average climate.

Wow, Juice, way to get the smack down on Lmit laugh

You got him chasing his tail on that exchange wink

Looks like the U is saving a little money over the time frame of Tubby's contract and injecting hope we can jump out of Tubby's mediocrity.

The U is Championship caliber in a lot of sports. For whomever thinks otherwise they have not always been mediocre in Football or Basketball either.

There is certainly no reason to sit still on Tubby's mediocrity. If Pitino does well here he will be able to write his own ticket whether he stays or leaves. It's that simple.

I hope you're doing your best Paul Allen impersonation, because anybody that thinks what you're saying is a kool-aid chugging bobo and nothing more.

Why did Rich leave FIU? And why don't you think he'll leave here?

Heck, he left FIU after one mediocre season. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he'll be here 2-3 years!

How do they say it Duck Dynasty...He's gonnne.

Mediocre season at fiu huh? Losing record last year, 3 scholarship players this year to 18 wins and one game short of NCAA tourney? Last time they had a winning record was in 2000. And how do you explain this as mediocre? A former NBA star (Isaiah Thomas) couldn't get that ship righted and left a mess for pitino to come to yet he made a lot of very little. I'm not about to out him in the hall of fame but I will certainly give credit where credit is due and he did a good job with what he had to work with.

18 wins.

18-14.

Yawn.

Expect more of the same here before he moves it on down the road.
