Fishing Clothing

I recently just got back from a trip to costa rica and just like many of the people down there I got burnt. So I told myself that this will be the last time I will let myself do that, and to do that I am going to buy some fishing clothing. What have you guys had luck with, I am looking for some long sleeve shirts that will not get super hot in the sun. And no I do not want to hear put on more sunblock.

Thanks

I don't burn easily either but apply a minimum of spf 30 sunscreen to all exposed skin and wear upf rated long sleeve shirts and pants. After attending a seminar on melanoma (skin cancer) and knowing friends who've had it I don't take chances. We're on the water over 100 days a year for work so there's a lot of exposure. If you spend time in the sun please google sun protection.

I started wearing a buff last year and will never go without again. I did it after a seeing a buddy from South Carolina wear one.

A buff is basically a lightweight neck gator, but it can also be pulled up to wear over the all or parts of the head and face. Worn as just a neck gator you will find that hat feeling you get in the back of your neck at night is gone.

There are also times especially early in the year where I pull it up over my ears and face just for a break from the sun. They are very common for saltwater fisherman. Not sure why they are not more popular around here.

Some good suggestions on clothes here, for additional ones go to some saltwater sites. There seems to be more of a focus on sun protection.

I'm pretty fair skinned and after my sister got melanoma last year, I made a commitment to covering up in the sun. I now wear the long sleeve columbia pfg shirts, I wear a hat that has an extension covering the back of my neck, I wear sun gloves, and of course I use sun block. I might look a little funny at times, but I'm ok with that. At least I'm not quite to the Pete Maina stage yet.

The long sleeved PFG shirts are amazing. They are actually cooler than a T-shirt. A good wide brim ventilated hat is a must. There are several aerosol sunscreens that work well. I like Bullfrog for its water repellent qualities. I also have a “stick” of sunscreen that resembles lip balm. This works great for the top of the nose, cheeks and ears. Don't forget to protect the tops of knees and feet. Add a pair of quality sunglasses and you are set.

Sunburns are painful and potentially dangerous. Simple steps can keep you comfortable and safe.

i buy columbia SPF 30/45 stuff on sale/clearance, very lightweight, plenty of venting, & generally waterproof, same with shorts/pants, for sprint winter SPF waterproof pants with zippered knees so can always change to pants or shorts as needed, & with cargo pockets always extra storage, usually buy the stuff in off season on sale

blue/brown my favorite easy to match boring colors

I assume you are referring to warm weather as it quite easy to cover up in cooler temps. I now spend three or four weeks a year in Hawaii and another one or two in other tropical locations and never have a problem with sun burn. I also burn quite easily. First of all buy a good brimmed hat like a Tilly. Brimmed hats will keep the sun off of your face and neck during the mid-day when the sun is most intense. For clothing go to beach shop next time you are in a beach area or visit one on the web which is full of them. They sell a wide variety shirts and pants that are cool and comfortable and will keep the sun off you. When you hit the water wear a rash shirt an knee length swim trunks. Top it off with some good quality sun screen and a good pair of sun glasses and you can stay out in the sun for the entire day with no burn.

Besides the columbia pfg stuff I also wear Reddington, and Simms shirts. I really like the Reddington stuff I thinks its a bit better qualit and looks sharper than some of the columbia stuff. It is a bit different material though.

Most of the SPF50 or whatever will give sun protection. The down side is they do not breath well. They all have vents but on a calm day you may need to cool down with a wet towl or fire up the big motor and do a cool down run. A quick dip works wonders on a hot day.

There are a lot of micro-fiber polyester athletic shirts that are great for outdoor use in the sun/bug weather. I have a bunch of long-sleeved shirts from ultimate frisbee leagues that are super light weight, wick away sweat, and protect your arms. I think this type of route is cheaper than buying specific fishing clothes.

A brimmed hat and sunscreen for the back of your neck is always a must.

I've got a couple long sleeve fishing shirts from LL Bean that I really like. You can literally wear them in 100 degree heat "comfortably".

They are made from a super light and breathable material and have a big vent between the shoulder blades.

The sleeves are easy to roll up when wanted and have a small button and loop to keep them in place.
