You guys need to start taking the girls with. 2c

Taking the whole family down to a Florida this weekend. No Disney, or Sea World just a few days hunting Osceolas. My son and I have already been down there so the girls are first up. My daughter is 6 and this will be her first time attempting to harvest one instead of just watching.

I'm between two decoys Avain X... full strutter or the Jake decoy. what do you think i should get. which is the overall best option. or it doesn't really matter a whole lot.

I've had many birds shy away from my full strut deke, not so much with my "Best Turkey Decoy" jake.

My wife's shot 3 birds with her bow, one's mounted in the basement! With a few young kids at home, we're just not able to get out together as much as we'd like. Hopefully this May in MN! smile

I'd pick the jake myself. Less to carry and won't intimidate any 2 yr olds. That strutter looks awesome though! I've got a few new jake decoys to try out this spring myself.

Just got the avian jake and hen in the mail today. Read a lot of good things about it. I have had ALOT of birds shy away from strutters. Spring is all planned for me! A trip to the black hills, to the badlands, to Kansas for some Rios, and MN D season!! Bring on the thunder chickens!

I'm heading to NE for bow opener on March 25. I'm super excited but I hope there's not any of that white stuff while we're down there.

We come back for 2 weeks and then hunt MN season A. I've never done MN on the opener before but I'm very excited.

Finally, I have a 10yr old girl in my house who is the MOST excited of all of us to go hunting for the first time. My daughter really wants to use her bow, but I'm trying to get her towards the 20ga.

And if I can swing it, I want to head back to NE to try and tag out. Its an easy trip so maybe we can make it a family camping trip. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

Yeah, I hear ya there! The birds are still going to be in their winter flocks, pretty sure about that. That's the main reason we don't hunt in March anymore, but we've seen plenty of snow in April too. It's always fun though, no matter what the conditions. You guys hunting the same place as last year? Can't wait for your report!

Got drawn for season A this year. 50's were predicted for the last week of March but now it's more of the same. Mid 30's with lows in the 20's. 40's for highs the first week of April. Doesn't leave much time to get rid of all the snow. May have to pack the white's in case one has to throw them on (pants at least) to blend into some residual snow cover?? Just hope the birds are at least somewhat receptive to calling???

Thinking about upgrading my decoys. Are the better dekes worth the extra $$? Is just a hen good enough? Right now I have cheap rubber hen and jake dekes.

I know it's a hard pill to swallow, but yes, the new pricey dekes are worth the extra $$$.

Is one hen enough? The simple answer is sometimes. As you probably know, every day is different.

The makers of the new Best Turkey Decoy jake say their decoy alone with no hen works really well. In my experience, sometimes. I usually use one of each and have had great success, much better than with the old "rubber chicken" looking dekes that were the norm just a couple years ago.

NE is going to be some snow. Talked to the land owners last night. One farm has over 200 birds still together and the other they are seeing 150 or so still. They have some snow but areas around them have more south and east of the farms.

I cannot wait for that first gobble Easter day.

"More cold and snow will help."

You bite your tongue!

Thanks for the update Hoyt. We've never hunted that early before, but I'm hoping for some warmer weather by the end of the week. It might be sloppy.

S&S- yes we will be in the same area so I'll be sure to pass on any info I can give. All 3 of us intend to video our hunts so I hope to have plenty of info to share. We are spending the week down there.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
