Storing Plastics?

For those of you with a boat. How do you guys store you plastics? I have a 18ft Triton so the storage space is limited. I actually use the cooler for storing my plastics. As of right now I use gallon ziplock bags for seperating items. Then I throw the similar items into a plastic grocery bag. It works but I get frustrated when trying to find a certain bait and I have to dig to the bottom to find it.

Plastics storage is my nemesis when it comes to keeping my stuff organized. I've tried bags, binders, Ziplocs, speed bags...you name it.

Finally settled on the deep Stowaways - either the 3600 or 3700 size depending.

I keep plastics in their original package and store them sorted by type (more or less) in boxes labeled with tape and a magic marker. So I have a box for jig trailers, one for grubs, one for tubes, creatures, jerkbaits, my panic box, etc. I have a 'deck box' with the stuff I use most often, or that I think I'm likely to use that day. It stays on the boat deck with me and I just restock that from the sorted boxes as I need to. The rest go in a compartment. I also have one back-up container with misc oddball stuff.

I have a friend who does more or less the same thing but with clear plastic storage containers. Seems to work.

Tony, we seem to have the same problem! The nice thing for you is that we're always in your boat so you have a good base for storage where as I have to have a traveling system. I keep my plastics in the original packaging and then I sort them out by presentation or type and put them in a gallon ziploc and write on the outside of the ziploc. I have Tubes, Dropshot, Trailers, Swimbaits, Senkos, etc. My collection was getting out of control before I moved to CO and the bag I used for my plastics wasn't even zipping anymore. I recently saw Aaron Martens explaining how he organizes his tackle in his boat - you might have seen it but if not here's the link:

In my little Ranger there is little storage. I blocked of both the bait well, and the live well to use.I never fish tournaments, and if keeping fish they go in a cooler on ice.My stuff goes into plano boxes that are marked. I do take my plastics out of the company bags, as they were hard to fold up. I put mine in plastic ziploc bags that take up less space.I just make sure NOT to mix brands!!! Learned that the hard way!!!

I use the deep insertless planos. Probably what rk uses. Then I put them in the storage compartment behind the passenger seat. I try and keep my heaviest tackle in that compartment. It balances my weight out. I only keep a small day box of tackle up front. You don't want weight up front. It kills performance. I also got rid of tons of plastics I never used. That made storing them easier. I own a 17' boat and the storage fills quickly. I feel your pain

Do not mix Z Man soft baits with any other kind. You'll end up with a big glob of goo. Found that out in Canada where the nearest tackle store was hundreds of miles away.

I have been using the exact same containers as hellabass. It works great for me. I'm going to have to try the zip tie trick. Very nice video.

Hi Hester,

Where can I find those bins? They look very practical and easy to use.

Thanks,

RK- I also prefer hundred packs. I stash the semi full 100 packs in my shop on peg board or in large totes and refill my planos as needed. May not be the best system, but works well for me. I do tend to keep the plastics that I plan to use for the day in the front storage and the rest in the back storage compartments of my Ranger. I don't like to leave plastics out in the sun too long as they tend to tear way easier in my experience, so I have the box that I will be using on top in the storage bin up front...pop the lid of the storage bin, open the plano grab a bait and back to slinging...

Anyone on here ever try the easy view tack system? Looks interesting and turns the underside of storage hatches into a easy way to organize your plastics and free up some space...ziplock organization did not work out very well for me last year so gonna either try this or the boxes this year.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
