While I'm sure you will get some good answers here, I would consider posting your question as well on the Duluth area forum.

Lotsa Laker knowledge round those parts.

Always wanted to fish Lake Trout in winter and never have.

Maybe this is the year? Hope so.

Good luck!

Generally in MN you won’t find decent Laker fishing until you get to the Northern part of the state. Some lakes in the central part of the state can be good, but when it comes to Lakers the Arrowhead region and BWCA is probably the best. Burnstside Lake near Ely is a favorite of many here. In fact a good chance to check it out is during the annual HSO Burntside Bash later in the season.

A guy can also get out on Superior and have GREAT days and if you want to check out something like that, take a look at our own Jim Hudson and his guide service. He catches some slobbos! And what a rush it is ice fishing in 200 feet of water!

If you want to get into some monster fish though your best bet is across the Canadian border.

Be careful here man, Lakers are pretty addicting. smile In fact if I still lived up there, I probably wouldn’t fish for anything else. The hunt reminds me a lot of Flathead fishing.

The Ely area has some very good lake trout fishing. Burntside and Snowbank are the two most popular lakes in the Ely area that are outside the BWCA. There is also some very good trout fishing inside the BWCA. The best way to get up to those lakes is via dogsled. You can also hike/snowshoe/ski into some but it takes much longer. Check out White Wilderness Dogsledding Adventures for getting a guide into the BWCA.(I think the HSOforum is getting worked on so check back if it doesn't come up). I guide for them and also guide trips on lakes outside the BWCA in the Ely area.

Fishing for lake trout through the ice is by far my favorite way fish. There is nothing like watching a fish scream up 30ft on the Vex to crush your bait. It is very addicting! smile

The fight is fun too!

Brett,

Trout are addicting - all kinds. But, in my opinion, Lake Trout, they are the most intense fish under the ice. When they are on, they leave burn marks on your flasher because they move so fast to take a lure. But, when they are off, they will make ya scratch your head. Kinda like musky fishing. You get addicted to the strike!

Anyhow, here on Lake Superior, a bit different then the inland variety. But, equally as fun. We fish deep water most of the time, and it is something to latch onto a 10lb + fish in water over a 100FOW.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Burntside Lake in Ely would be my 1st choice. However, Grand Marais area will offer more lakes to fish. Gunflint Lake is a good choice, trout lake and west bearskin are also popular places.

As far as tackle goes...I don't believe color matters all that much, but white is my favorite. Bucktails and jigging spoons are go to lures...I like jigging rattle traps also. Don't be afraid to use big lures, as a small trout can still take a good size jig/minnow. Jigging raps have some good action too.

i found him on FB i may have to give him a shout.

A group of us have been using Rob Nelson, Ely Fishing Guide Co. for several years now with terrific results up there as well. I'm sure Steve F is also top notch, just figured if you want another option, give Rob a call.

On another note, has anyone ever fished for LT after dark? I've heard they're not night fish but I'm not one to accept something I hear as fact.

I have never caught lake trout after dark. If i am camping i will keep the tip ups in after dark to see if we can pick up a bonus walleye and have never caught a laker. I have caught lakers in very low light at the beginning and end of the day tho.

I work with Rob and the Ely Fishing Guide Company in the summer. Rob has been guiding for a very long time. He knows the lakes better than most and knows how to get the fish on the ice.
