The Rut

Recommended Posts

I responded sarcastically earlier because I didn't really want to get into this issue. Its been discussed in depth in the past.

The bottom line is that "the rut" is not a singular, identifiable or quantifiable event. The pre-rut, post-rut, and rut are all phases of "the rut". Additionally, what is typically termed "THE rut" is not a definable event within the within "the rut" - it happens over time.

grin Yep we do this every year. I can't wait until someone spots a buck chasing a doe in Oct and is ready to proclaim the rut is on!

I sat on stand last weekend bow hunting and had a buck give a doe a half hearted chase around the field at dark, he didn't seem really into it and when she ran out of the field he didn't follow. Have some rubs and scrapes in the area too. looking forward to this weekend hoping for some better action.

Only details I've ever needed to know was to be in the woods from October 20th through November. My best time for seeing bucks October 25th to November 12th. From my experience in northern MN the peak of the rut is around November 8th-12th. Vacation starts tomorrow ends November 10th.

I dont know about MN, but here in western ND it has been raining/storming/windy for the past 2.5 days. Historically I have noticed that there is usually a storm like this in the middle-late october and after that storm is when we really start seeing the rut heat up. If I could I would love to be on a stand tomorrow or whenever the storms blows through.

There have been a few times when the storms carries out for more than a few days and the deer just gotta get up and move after awhile and we see the chasing before the storm is completely done.

Can't argue with any of that surewood, especially with the peak rut dates. Our group and neighbors see and shoot a lot of nice bucks on those dates.

It is on for sure,

Wife came home from the store and herd some racket behind the wood shed. She thought someone was throwing firewood against the barn walls.

Two bucks and a doe ran off. Those boys musta been fighten back there.

wondering if the locals will be locked down around here this weekend?

Tuned up/fixed up three stands this past Saturday. When we walked the boundary to look for another location to place a stand I saw a number of scrapes. Feels crazy to say this but there were literally 6 of them within 30 yards of each other in one spot. They were not full blown scrapes that were large and really worked over but all of them were probably 2-2.5 feet in diameter. Not what I'm used to seeing but spoke to the previous owner of the property and he had been out there a week before and none of them were there. Fired up about some buck activity!
