eyeguy 54
By golly this is working good. A little banana in a plastic cup. Plastic wrap taped with a few holes in it. Kinda like a minnow trap lol
BartmanMN
Thanks for the tip. We have them right now even though we didn't have any fruit. They are annoying.
itchmesir
i use a mason jar filled with cider vinegar and a couple drops of hand/dish soap.. the soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar.. so when fruit flies land on the surface to sip up some of the sweet goodness.. they drown
eyeguy 54
I am trying that also to see what works best
leechlake
last year was the first year we had them and it was a near epidemic. I was trying some of these things with some success but one evening my wife had friends over and they were drinking wine and without fail everyone had fruit flies in their wine glass, obviously the wife and I were not happy.Steps we took included all fruit and vegetables were stored in the fridge. If we needed to ripen them they went into some sort of sealable bag while in pantry. No flowers in the house, I buy her flowers frequently, but that was put on hold until the fruit flies were under control. Every day I cleaned countertops with a very mild bleach/water solution. 3 Table Spoons bleach to about a gallon of water. Also, the fruit flies seemed to be in the traps of the sinks, even in a few bathrooms. When we turned water on the flies were "flushed" out of traps. We closed traps while the "hunting/eradication season" was over.Obviously we smooshed everyone we saw but the real key to final removal was eliminating the sources of food. Besides fruit and veggies they seem to like any sweet object.

leechlake
key to wine or vinegar or anything is the dish soap to break the surface. Do that and you'll increase your catch rate.
Dave S
we're doing the cider vinegar and dish soap at work and it's been working really well. To the tune of 50 flies per cup in one day. The little buggers are all over the place.
eyeguy 54
speaking of surface tesion here's a fun trick to pull on the kids. sprinkle pepper on watr in a cup. have them touch it with a finger, nothing happens. being sneaky put a drop of dishsoap on your finger tip and say, now watch the magic I have and tounch the cup in the middle. the pepper will shoot to the edges of the cup. :>)practice first lol
delcecchi
A tiny bit of oil, like rubbing your nose, will do it also.
