Whistler jig with a frozen/dead minnow.4. Mepps Dressed Aglia #4 spinner (red and white). What do you have luck on?

guideman
Lots of good baits there however for my money, a spinnerbait is the best pike lure ever made. They catch fish in all conditions, spring, summer, or fall andyou can work them fast or slow, deep or shallow and they catch big fish! ------------------Terry "Ace" Sjobergaceguideservice.comLake VermilionMuskies and More. Matt Johnson
John Eggers makes a spinner called the Monster Bow that drives the pike crazy! Its like a lightning bolt shooting through the water, flashing and calling those toothy critters in. Stratosman
My all time big pike bait has to be a small bucktail, 6" +-, for numbers I would have to say a tandem willow spinnerbait, they just tear 'em up! And of course the old red and white standby has probably caught more pike than everything else combined.
SledNeck_X
Where I fish in Northern Minnesota the best bait for northerns is a Yellow spinner bait with yellow leaf, also white and yellow with silver blade. Some of the smaller lakes I fish I catch 25-40 pike a day on these. sometimes I add a trailer hook if its not too weedy where Im fishing. Be prepared to lose alot of fish on these, but when its weedy its worth it.
muskieboy46
i'd say a spinnerbait with trailer, colors change periodically.
LocalGuide
My goto lure is a northland tackle tandem Reed-runner (pro-model). I have never caught more fish on any other lure casting than on that lure. Then I add a trailer hook and attach a minnow or a plastic grub.My next is probably a suick, and that is normally better in the spring time above the new weed growth. I am hoping to add some salmo lure to my arsenal this summer to try.------------------And keep those hooks sharp!
The Grebe
For size, a huge decoy sucker hooked to a quick strike rig....for quanity, any of the above lures mentioned.
wrshog
Spinner baits all the way. I have had the best luck with painted spinner baits. Perch or baby bass, double Colorado blades 3/8 to 1/2 ounce. Pike can't stand to see them free fall in front of a weed line. Even pulled a 40" 'ski with one last year.I get mine from Bill at soblures.com. Great quality and not a bad price. Best of all they catch fish not just fisherman. Let me know if you have luck with the Salmo's. I own 2 never even got a hit on 'em. They look nice though, and they caught me! WoodlandSavage
You know, I've caught a lot of pike on spinner baits when bass fishing, but I've never tried to target pike with spinner baits. Has anyone caught sizeable pike (10+ lbs.) on spinner baits?------------------The Woodland Savage"Grrr baby, very grrr!"
MuskyBrian
All of the above baits obviously work extremely well. Over the last few years though, I have used a large, bass-style spinner bait called the "Terminator" which is found in many Musky sections of certain stores. It's a bright orange/green.yellow pattern with a double gold and silver blade. An absolute KILLER in weeds, HIGHLY would suggest you pick one up if you have never tried it before. muskieboy46
WoodlandSavage-all my big fish (muskies and northern) have come on bass size spinnerbaits. I have a whole box full of huge muskie lures but havent caught anything on them yet...
WoodlandSavage
muskieboy,That's cool. I've never caught large pike on spinner baits. I think maybe the biggest on I've ever caught on a spinner bait is 5-7 lbs. And I usually catch them when bass fishing. I'll have to try targeting them with bass size spinner baits.Has anyone read the article in the June-July Infisherman about pike fishing? Pretty interesting article that talks about their eating habits and the water temp. With everything the article talks about, it makes sense that pike would go after spinner baits in shallower water.------------------The Woodland Savage"Grrr baby, very grrr!" J-Hawk
My favorite bait to use is a big spinnerbait. The lead really helps with long casts and they are virtually snag free. They work well at many speeds and depths. The hook is generally easier to remove than most other baits which gives you more time in the water. There is something to be said about large jigs and suckers too. This simple rig has produced some nice pike for me lately. Just remember to wait a second or two to let the pike turn the bait around before you set the hook. Stinger hooks don't hurt either.
