Fins-n-feathers
Do you have to pay a monthly bill for hooking up a wifi router to a dsl modem? There seem to be some disagreements within our family about this.

CJH
Yes - if you rent it from the DSL provider. Not if you own your router.
Fins-n-feathers
So we rent our router but if we buy the router ourselves?
Jim43
So we rent our router but if we buy the router ourselves? If you own your own WiFi router, there will be no fee from your provider. And if you own your own modem you will not be charged a monthly fee it.

Just to clarify you still will have to pay for your service, just not for the modem/router.

masoct3
You will pay for internet service. If you own your modem, you will not be charged. The break even point is about 3 years for the cost. Adding a wireless router does not cost anything. If you have DSL, you can get a PK5000 modem/wireless router in one. Call them up and they will give it to you for cheaper than an older modem. Fins-n-feathers
Another question...It looks like the router I am looking at only has the phone cord type cord and port. My modem has only one of these and I need to hook up my desktop also. My modem has several usb type ports that are labeled for wifi but it doesn't look like the router comes with one of these cords. However, the router has LAN ports on the back. Can I hook up my desktop computer to the internet through these? If not, what do I have to buy? Thank you for putting up with my complete wifi stupidity.
jac714
Yes, you should have a port for the modem adn 4 others, you can plug your desktop into any of those 4.

Fins-n-feathers
Why do you want to hook up your desktop through that? It defies the need for wifi. The modem is already right next to the desktop but it would be nice if the laptop could stay mobile
delcecchi
A typical wireless router has some wired ports on the back as well as the wireless. I am typing this on a computer hard wired to the router, while the laptop is connected wirelessly.
masoct3
Not sure where we are at. However, your ethernet from the main line goes into the main port on router. Then a desktop cable to the router, then enable wireless in router settings.
