I had the redirect problem for about a month. I have Frontier Max security and it could find the problem and seemed to fix it, but it would always come back. I know the problem was in my backup. I have the backup hooked directly to the computer and the virus scan would run and would do the backup last and the very last second, it would pick up the virus. I called the company numerous times and got redirected (no pun intended0 many times to different people and they ended up fixing it. One of the things I know they did was deleted some backup dates in the backup system and used TSS(?) killer. I know very little, but I hope this helps.

NoFish can you confirm that you do have the original Restore disks..?

My computer has a "restore to factory" button within the control panel options that I can select. No need for a disc to do it.

I plan on doing the complete restore using that option I just haven't had a chance to locate the install discs I need for the router. I want to make sure I have that first so I am not without internet once I do the restore.

You do not need your router install disks. Just do your restore and you should connect just fine to the internet. Your router is more than likely setup for DHCP and will give an address automatically. If you do have problems just go into Network settings. Click on Ipv4 and then properties. In that box make sure that DHCP and DNS are set to auto. If you are not sure go take a look at the settings before you do your restore.

O I am sure given time and determination you could have solved it, but there comes a time when it just isn't worth the effort. Restore and you also start with a clean slate without the issues that accumulate over time.

I am one of those computer hacking nerds err programmers. I have been in your shoes many times for both my own machines and all my friends and relatives who think because I am a programmer I like to fix everything computer related.

I would typically accept that theory from anyone of my tech junkie friends.

However the time you've invested into it already has the virus winning. Restore would have had you up and running 2 weeks ago. Just do it and save yourself the frustration

Alright, heres my update.

I spent this afternoon doing a complete restore to factory settings. I just got everything back up and running and I haven't yet loaded back on any backed up data (music, photos, etc)

First thing I did was go to IE and the first thing that happened was I got a the same "404 Not Found" message at the top middle of the page like I was getting before. I then went to google and did a couple test searches. I searched HSO Outdoors. The first result listed looks good and takes me to the list of forums, so all is good there. The second result on the list is for fishingminnestoa.com and all looks good but then I click on it and it takes me to addedsuccess.com. So I am STILL getting redirected. One of the other sites that pops up is Happili.com.

I tried it with a few other search terms and whatever search result you click on first it takes you to the correct site, but then whatever result you click second it will redirect you to some random search site. This time it is happening in both IE and Firefox. When it first started happening it was in firefox to but I was able to stop that during all of the previous clean up attempts.

How is it possible that after a complete restore the problem is still going on. I can't imagine I screwed up the restore process since its pretty much just push the button and sit back and let it work.

What the heck do I do know? I just fired my last and biggest bullet at this thing and it didn't do a dang thing.

You still have a virus or malware. That must not have done a complete restore/re install. Are your apps still there?

Everything appeared to go back to factory condition. Anything I put on it was gone and it looked like it did when it came out of the box.

I figured I did all I can do as a non tech guy so I brought.it into General Nanosystems in Mpls. The guy I talked.to there said its not uncommon for this type of virus to put something on the recovery partition to prevent the restore from wiping it out. They are going to take it from here and fix.it for.me. They said the best bet at this point is to reload the operating system and then reload antivrus/

It might have only been a stun gun but it was the best I could go. I gave it a good effort considering I know next to nothing about this stuff. I'm letting General Nanosystems take it from here. I have nothing but good things to say about them so I don't really mind giving them my business, even more so now during light rail construction. Although I didn't see any signs of their business struggling during the construction interuption.

FINAL UPDATE

Got the computer back from General Nanosystems today. They said it would take a little over a week but they got it back to me in less than 2 business days.

They reinstalled the operating system and set me up with new antivirus so I'm not using norton any more. They set me up with Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG.

I haven't had a chance to put my data back on yet but everything is up and running nice a smooth. The only problem is that it is no long recognizing my TV Tuner card that I have installed. It came with the computer so I don't have any sort of install disc. I'm guessing I can probably download the driver for it online somewhere. At least I hope I can.

Anyways the final word is that the virus is dead.
