Marcum LX5 question.

Question

Yesterday, my brother and I were at a local lake testing our equipment.

For some odd reason, both of our LX5's weren't reading fish nor our bait when dropping down.

It did tell how deep the water was. We were at about 17 fow. I don't know if it's our devices that were acting up or if it's something else. We bought these used last year, and this is our second year of using the LX5, and it worked flawlessly last year. We tried playing with the gain, zoom, and the other modes,,,but none of them made any difference.

Is this a sign of a transducer going bad?

This might be a dumb question but,,,can someone re-itterate how the 20/40/60/80 and so on settings is supposed to work.?

Seems strange that both of you would have bad transducers but I guess it would be possible. The 20/40/80 knob will set the maximum depth that it will read. If you set it for 20' and you are in 25' you will not see the bottom 5'. If you set it for 80' and you are in 40' it will be half ways on your locator.

Possibility of current in the lake?? Could have drifted your baits out of the cone, assuming your ducers were set below the bottom of the ice and not tipped against the ice? Odd 2 would have bad ducers at the same time, willing to bet current was the culprit... Guys here were having to drill holes 3-4' away from there jigging hole over the weekend to see their baits....

That makes sense......

We were fishing about 100 yards or so from a small dam.

I don't know why i didn't think of this.

I'm gonna go out this weekend again, to a different lake ofcourse,,and try it again.

What's funny is that I've been out to the st.croix river before and was able to use the lx5 with no problems?

I find it hard that both units were having identical issues at the same time and not reading properly. To contradict you arent even sure of the depth settings so that tells me you dont know how to operate your LX5.

You said nothing about adjusting the gain or depth settings. Is it possible that you werent on 17ft, reading the dial wrong and never set the correct depth on the knob?

How can it be a water current issue when your fishing the Croix and its working? Cause the Croix definitely got current...

I really don't know what else to say. As I mentioned before, we bought these used. They didn't come with any manuals. But we are still learning new things about them everytime we get out.

Thanks to all that chimed in.
