1 lb Propane Tanks are SPENDY!!!

Holy smokes! I went fishing last weekend and left my 20 pound tank at home because I didn't want to drag it...got to the gas station and they're charging $5.50 for a one pound propane tank! What a rip! I can fill a 20 pounder for right around $18. Guess I'm hauling the big tank from now on!

Well, it is a lesson that you have learned and won't forget in the near future. Convenience stores got you by the short ones if you are more than a half hour from a bix box store. The best part for them; you'll pay it! I've seen them in 4 packs for less than $10, 2 packs for around $5, and singles around $3. On a per pound basis, 20 lbers are the way to go when you take the price of the tank into account, but you have to carry around a big tank and the hose for it. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

20 lb- $25 for a tank, and $15-25 for a fill

10 lb- $50 for a tank, and $10-20 for a fill

5 lb- $50 for a tank, and $10-20 for a fill

4) 1 lb tanks- $10, and the convenience and space/weight saving of carrying only what you use

I made the same mistake at a convenience store once. I picked up 2 without looking at the label, got to the cash register and realized when she rung me up that they were $7.49 each! I do have a hose, but don't like dragging a big tank around on early/late ice.

fleet farm or walmart. I also buy them at little bait shops. Just because I know they make such a profit on them. I wouldn't buy one from a holiday or store like that but a private owned bait and tackle I buy from there. I have no problem helping keep ma and paps afloat with buying spendy jigs, propane or snacks. But i do buy most of them at walmart.

Don't forget that you can't just throw the green tanks in the trash when they're empty either.

anybody have any luck refilling the 1 pounds..I have seen adapters for refilling them from a 20 lb cylinder..with the whole world talking (green) all the time it seems a tremendous waste using them one time ...

It's illegal to transport refilled 1lb cylinders.

they dont have to be spendy if u think ahead a little bit & get on sale, FF has great price for 4 pak and wallys same for 2 pak

personally i understand the value in trying to save a buck but why would anyone want to attemp to refill these things when it could be potentially very dangerous transferring a flammable gas & illegal transporting them? trying to save abuck in this stituation does not make any cents to me at all

so we can't throw them into the garbage and I don't think they will take them in my recycleable tubs..will a scrap yard take them? What is everybody doing with them?

I have about 3 sitting on a shelf empty now..more coming as I use them in my lantern.

I've always just thrown them in my recycling and never had an issue or been told otherwise. But call your recycling company to confirm.

Well, if you can manage to put a small hole (or big hole) in them with a very fast moving piece of metal from a safe distance away, you can then throw them in the trash as scrap metal. grin

10 lb refill is around 10 bucks. That is a buck a lb which is nice. The other advantage is having them outside the house. Having 1 lb propane tanks inside the house scares me. Having a 10 lb tank it is outside the house instead of inside. If there is a leak there is fire if the propane tank is in the house there is an explosion.
