SneakyPete
Ok, but what do the Canucks have to do with US North, eh? Have we been invaded???
SneakyPete
Apparently there is a bit of a legal dispute in progress between Navionics and CHS over royalties: Piracy Lawsuit... Still, I can't imagine why that affects US lakes at all.
CAMAN
Quote:However, C-Map and Navionics, two Italian companies with North American offices in the USA, have been pirating the CHS data and selling nautical charts for use with their proprietary hardware and software for a number of years.Ouch!! If this proves to be true this could hurt Navionics reputation big time.In this case I'm assuming CHS got permission from the US government to scan the entire Voyageurs National Park, not just the Canadian side. If that is the case it belongs to Canada and Navionics better get their own boats up there to scan the lakes.
Wish-I-Were-Fishn
This really bites unless you can run Lakemaster in your boat electronics.
SneakyPete
Still, the only reason I can think of that they would take the US HD maps out of this app would be if they had similar issues here on this side of the border.
CAMAN
Very weird! Why would issues with CHS have ANYTHING to do with maps here in metro area? (Bald Eagle for instance) Last I heard this is still the USA... Pete-I just checked out Bald Eagle and it was exactly the same thing as I found with Prior lake. It was 5' contours, so I re-downloaded the Bald Eagle map, it came back all pixelated and blocky. I then went into my app manager and force closed the app. Went back to Navionics and it is now 1' contours. Try it, I guaranty it will work. Wish-I-Were-Fishn
Then why are they still on the iPad app? I'm thinking it has to be glitch with the android app. Gee, maybe I better not tell them or they may mess that up too!
SneakyPete
It works, just like you said it would (thanks!). So, every time we want to check for higher def we have to try downloading the lake a second time? So then I tried downloading over the top of my TC area map. That didn't work for me like downloading just the one lake...

Either they haven't updated the app lately to remove the map, or they are unable to physically delete a specific map from devices it has been downloaded to? CAMAN
So, every time we want to check for higher def we have to try downloading the lake a second time? Yeah, that is what I have begun to do on lakes that I intend to go to or want to check out the map of. Kind of a pain but atleast it doesn't take very long to do on a 3g connection. SneakyPete
Yes, and it definitely has been removed. Yeah but, yeah but...Cabin-toga-mama is one of their "Exclusive HD" lakes. If they surveyed it themselves it shouldn't be affected.

Still, I can't imagine why that affects US lakes at all. After doing a little more research on this lawsuit it seems the only information I can find on it is from 2004-2005. There is nothing I can find that says anything about a settlement or if they were found guilty or not. Could this still be going on or finally getting to it 5-6 years later? delcecchi
NDI, the company that was party to the lawsuit, filed bankruptcy and the rights reverted back to the Canadian government. Here is an article. -----------------Nautical Data International, Inc.On March 30, 2007, Newfoundland-based Nautical Data International, Inc. ("NDI") and the Canadian Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans ("DFO") completed the sale back to DFO of NDI's rights under its sole licence agreement with DFO, thus concluding the relationship between the parties that had begun in 1993 when DFO first licensed the rights to NDI.Prior to the sale, NDI had the sole right to distribute electronic charts and data produced by the Canadian Hydrographic Service ("CHS"), which are of tremendous significance in navigation and underwater exploration. With the sale, CHS has now itself reassumed responsibility for distribution of electronic navigational products through a network of dealers and value-added resellers.NDI was represented by chief executive officer Mohammad Al Zaibak and board chair Dr. Phil Lapp, and by Fasken Martineau with a team led by Ian Kyer, and including Jason Kee (corporate/commercial, technology and IP), Mitchell Thaw (tax), Paul Casuccio (commodity tax), Edmond Lamek (bankruptcy), Ronald Walker and Jennifer Egsgard (litigation), and Kevin Yip (student-at-law).This transaction followed extensive litigation between NDI and DFO in the Bankruptcy Court of Newfoundland and Labrador and in the Federal Court of Canada, in which NDI was represented by a team from Fasken Martineau led by John Campion and including Berkley Sells and Beth Givens. --------------------------followed by this article from 2010 http://www.charts.gc.ca/announcements-annonces/2010/2010-07-30-eng.asp30-July-2010 - The Canadian Hydrographic Service (www.charts.gc.ca) and Navionics S.p.A. (www.navionics.com) have signed a CHS Value-Added Reseller (VAR) licence. As a CHS VAR, Navionics is licenced to reproduce CHS digital charts and updates for the purpose of integrating them into Navionics digital value-added products. From other posts I read there is some confusion about the agreement and the resulting updates. Search on chs navionics to find various things of interest.
SneakyPete
Whoa! I missed the part where the piracy lawsuit had been settled AND the part where Nav and CHS signed up in 2010. So, if that isnt it than why are they blaming the poor maps on CHS? How come US maps are so much worse in this edition? Even lakes in Missouri? I like the new interface a lot better, I like the new wind and weather forcasts, but the maps really took a hit. I'm back to the old Lakes North and Lakes South for now... My cynical thing is that they noticed that guys with smartphones were buying the app for 10 dollars insead of shelling out 100+ for a SD card. So the solution is only put crummy data on the app. You want the good stuff gotta spend the do re mi. Savvy marketing on their part.
SneakyPete
Your cynical thing is probably 100% spot-on correct. Maybe they think it is savvy marketing but in my case they are burning bridges. I just picked up my first FF with GPS and I'm shopping maps. The old version wasn't especially accurate (in my experience)but it was good enough that Nav was in the running for getting my chip business. At this point the decision seems to be down to whether or not to wait for the newest version from Lakemaster. Savvy marketing lost them a chance with this customer. My do re mi goes elsewhere... nofishfisherman
What lakes are you seeing that are missing them? I've just looked at a few lakes and they all seem to have the contour lines labeled with the numbers.
DTro
Huh, seems to happen on all the lakes to me. Soon as I turn on the Satellite overlay, bam the numbers are gone. The contour lines are still there though.
SneakyPete
Same thing happens to me. If I remember right it was a problem in the old version (that I seem to remember got fixed...).

I have yet to see any other maps that have gotten worse besides the VNP lakes? Besides the bug where you have to redownload lakes individually, but I just got a new phone and was able to download the entire Metro and all the lakes came in as good or better than the old app. Please point them out and I will make mention of them in my next email to Navionics.
