Grandson got his deer :)

Well, took my 14 yo grandson out for his first deer hunt (he duck hunts with me) and he got a great deer! It wasn't the biggest but he did a great job, listened intently to everything as we sat in the stand for about 8 hours on Saturday, waited for a safe shot, and took a perfect kill shot in the vitals.

Holy cow was he excited! More so than I ever expected, it was a pretty great experience for us both. He got his arms dirty, and he loved the whole process of "Deer camp" from prep, to cooking, to sitting watching empty woods, to the last 45 minutes of hunting when the deer started moving - did it get exciting then!

He is hooked for life on it now! Tonight is butchering night, and he is all set to do much of it himself.

He said this after we gutted it and retelling the story of his "first deer"... "Grandpa I am so glad I learned to fish and hunt, and clean them, I am for sure going to take my kids out when I have them so learn this stuff just like me." Pretty proud moment. Then we went back, and he grilled up some duck breasts and HIS backstrap for us all ... it wasn't a huge backstrap but it was the best tasting stuff ever!

I remember my son's first archery deer. better than any of the big bucks I have shot.

Makes the whole season one huge success no matter what size the deer is.

Way to go dad ans son for the great job on the kill.
