Ok...just wondering what the rules and regulations on this issue is? If I understand correctly, you can have a sidearm with you statewide while deer hunting during gun season. And its caliber is .22 or larger? I know in order for you to carry a sidearm while archery hunting for deer is only legal if you have a carry permit. So then if your shotgunning or up north with a rifle and want to carry a sidearm...does that also require a carry permit or is it legal? A few of us were discussing this very issue over the opener and facts and hearsay and well...u know the rest. So if anyone knows anything or has the right facts please help out and correct this for our group. Ohh....by the way opener for us was not very good with high winds making the tree I was in lean over to where i can almost touch the ground! grin

I asked a similar question and was told no as long as the handgun is legal in the area as in legal cal. and all then no carry permit is needed... but in archery season that should be changed, I heard too many stories of some relatives bow hunting and hearing that walking to their stands they hear yotes and wolves near by so they run HAHAHA I would too. If you can hear a pack take down a deer close by and you can hear the deer struggle grunt and all, uhhh yea Im outa there!

It's my understanding that you can carry a rimfire, assumably .22, IF you have a carry permit. Thought being that you are carrying it for a purpose other than taking a deer. And it would not be legal to take a deer with that .22.

But I could be wrong.

I believe you are correct about this but it does seem a bit weird that you could be allowed to carry an illegal caliber firearm while deer hunting.

Ya I'm pretty sure you can carry that caliber while deer hunting. Its a weird law, like the one that says MN is a open carry state so really i don't ever need to case what ever firearm im using to hunt with If i plan on using it for self defense. smirk

Without a permit to carry or license to carry, you cannot under any circumstances carry a loaded uncased handgun in a motor vehicle. Also, the case law for rifles and shotguns only applies while going to or from the hunting area you intend to hunt that day. You cannot just throw a rifle on a gun rack in the back window of your truck year-round.
