Cabin break in...meth!

Recommended Posts

With all that's been said:

IF they did cook meth, there's no need to burn it down like others have stated. I'm sure the owner has some insurance on the place. The insurance company should pay for the clean up.

That said, I really think you need to investigate the incident more. Seems like you're really unsure what took place in the cabin. It needs to be determined what took place. I'm sure the county or state would come out and do some tests. Take care of it and don't enter it until there's no doubt it is safe to do so. It's no joke to enter a meth lab area.

Sorry to hear about the break in, but the likely-hood of it being meth is pretty low, I do realize people might say well its pine county, I've worked and lived in that community and there is a lot of meth use, but contrary to popular belief meth is really not made here in the states, 99% of the meth here in MN comes from Mexico, cheaper to make and less rules down there, the government has actually done a good job cracking down on the making of it but the use is still pretty high. But like I said before, I'm sorry to hear about the break in the deputies up there do good work, hope they close the case!

Uptrack - Yup, you are right, we are really unsure. Since it is not my cabin, I am only going by what I saw in the brief moment I was in there and what the owners son told me. The Pine County sheriff that was there didn't really give his two cents on whether or not meth was cooked or not. He also told us it is a bigger problem in the northern part of the county, but it does exist.

An update - the owner has contacted his insurance company on what to do next, they are to contact him today. We (I) have decided, since it is only an hour from our front door, to drive up Saturday morning and drive home Saturday night. Too bad since it is my youngest sons' first deer hunt and he gets to miss out on "Escanaba in da Moonlight" for the 8th time in 8 years...

I would still go and stay the night. If it were a lab you would find all kinds of evidence, ( they do not care where they throw stuff) The wood stove would have leveled the cabin period!. Empty propane tanks, Medicine box;s and wrappers laying all over inside and out. empty plastic bottles , burnt residue in the pans, dirty drying sheets etc. but the most notible item would be the smell from amonia/propane. This is used for freeze drying the liquid meth. Sounds like some teenie bopper and his girly has a little weekend getaway, thus the pans in the sink upside down to drain. either they were some what responsible by keeping it half way clean or they planned on using more often but now have got spooked with the sherrif and you guys showing up. Go hunt take the boys, just one more thing to chat about years from now ( more deer camp stories.

yep go and stay the night without a worry...if you go there and it looks like an unstable area to sleep with your kids then drive the hour home but I would still keep the plan to sleep there unless given a better reason.

I think I'd stay there. There are just too many items missing for me to believe they were cooking there. And who would break into a place and do the dishes and clean up all the stuff that goes along with meth production?

This is a list of things to look for, but I don't see much if any of these things in this particular account of the break in.

I would wash the sheets though, or bring some new ones. sick

Being that my [PoorWordUsage] for a brother has been in trouble with that stuff twice, it really does not sound like you had a meth lab there. You would of seen a LOT of stuff sitting around from it. People who make it don't really give 2 rips about what they leave behind. You would of seen empty pill containers, coffee filters with white residue, tubes, bottles, etc. The chances of them using a woodstove are slim to none. I believe that they have to regulate the heat enough for stuff to not explode, and I can't imagine someone like that being able to regulate heat too much with wood. Also as was stated before, they use anhydrous ammonia. You can smell that stuff from a mile away. I would feel very safe about staying in the cabin without worries. I think, like machohorn said, it was a couple kids using it for a little rendezvous.

Thanks Rob. We are going to a "plan B", but Josh should get his first sit alone this year in the treestand after all. Sam will be sitting with me.

Thanks for all the responses again. The more we look at it, it seems like they may have just 'squatted' there for a while.
