Fox squirrels?

Elmer and Emily and their family have been with us for several years.

North of Alexandria.....way out in the boonies. They have cousins here too including grey and black squirrels, little red squirrles and happy-go-lucky little chhipmunks too.

Used to shoot a few of them for a squirrel fry. But breaded pork chops are better and I don't have to skin them.

Wow!! That's news to me. Maybe I should start heading up north instead of south. I have hunted the southern half region of MN my whole life, and never really gone up north. The furthest I've probably gone up north is Sherburne county. That was a long time ago though.

Can anyone recommend a good public hunting area that I may be able to find some fox squirrels? I'm not looking for exact hot spots, but just something in general....ie...like "carlos avery". Or a name of some sort. I would like to do my own scouting. Getting to new areas and learning them is very exciting.

Thanks.

Does the wma's specify wether there are oaks, pine, or soft/hardwood? I assume this is in the mndnr's HSOforum??

Go to link:

Select Isanti County and click on a WMA then select interactive covertype map. Upland deciduous forest areas is a good place to start. Also if you download the google earth application, the aerial photos will give you info also.

I headed down south to winona county this past weekend, and got 6 grays and 1 fox squirrel. I could've gotten more. But I shoot a 22 caliber and if they don't stop, I can't shoot. I will probably make plans to head up north one of these weekends.
