Busted

I have hunted deer for a long time but this is my first year bow hunting. My wife and I had the chance to go out on Saturday (her first year hunting any big game) I set my wife up in a nice trail intersection and I set up on a good used trail. So we have the two rookie bow hunters set up and ready to go. Being a old gun hunter, we never worried to much on scent but with the bow we know what got to get close so we did the whole shower thing and sprayed down with scent killer before we entered the woods. We do not have stands so we have to hunt on the ground. My wife did not see anything although she said she is pretty sure she heard one go behind her. I got busted by a young buck. He wheezed and took off with no shot opportunity. Long story short deer scores one wife and I zero. Wife can't wait to go again. I don't think I will ever hunt deer with a rifle again. Awesome sport is what I say.

Yep it's fun stuff. I had an old mature doe at 6 yards this weekend, she just caught the tail end of my draw and locked in on me so we had a little stare down and I could count her eye lashes. I just needed 1 second to get my pins settled but she bolted.

Bow hunting rules!

Wife started 3 years ago and has had many close calls and has even left an arrow or 2 fly, but no connection and last week she had a doe under 10 yards and she was at full draw and needed the doe to take 1 more step to release and the doe never scented her, doe stopped turned and walked away, no shot opportunity, but we believe in scent control and playing the wind. We hunt from stands and she is severely addicted. Now my daughter and son-in-law are amoung the newly bitten.

Good luck and have fun!

Pretty tough to whack a deer on the ground. They are so alert to everything. Sounds, smells, movements... It can be done but it is tough. Pick up a double ladder and sit together. That would be a good way to learn together and share the experiences. Man just wait until one of you shoot one!

Stands are definitely in the future. We are a little short on cash at the moment. A neighbor has offered me a couple of stands to borrow and I think we are going to take him up on that offer until I can afford to buy some for ourselves. It is great to have your wife of 27 years trying something new like archery and then digging it. We are hunting public land but from what I have seen, I think we are in the right area. Even if we do not get a shot it is way more fun (and warmer) than gun hunting. A lot less hunters in the woods also. It is like you have the whole world to yourself. We really enjoy it.

Be careful not to distance oneself from gun hunters, there's many reasons we don't bow hunt, I've coached over a thousand football players in my day and had to choose between helping young boys and girls from mid-august to nov. 1st and beyond on good years which at the varsity level is nearly a 7 day a week job with scouting and reviewing tape etc. I hunt geese as I want my children to be able to participate and not worry about being quiet or moving to much etc. plus that leads into pheasants/grouse/etc. home protection etc. It was a tough decision on my conscience, bow hunt for my selfish love it reasons or hang with a community and give to it's youth. That bow I got 25 years ago has a lot of dust on it. I think time is the biggest factor in whether you bow or not. So getting busted by a deer is a learning experience that you learn from just like a football player learns from his or her mistakes. Best of luck and enjoy the fall and I hope you bust the deer before they bust you ! smile

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
